The next morning, Rainbow was at the Gryffindor house table with Spitfire, Fleetfoot, her sister, and Soarin. their conversation turned to their parents before long.

"I live with my mom, she's a witch, but my dad wasn't. He hurt me and my brother because we're like her. He's in prison, I'm here, and my brother is a year older than me, so he's here too." Spitfire said, waving at a boy entering the Great Hall. He looked like her, but his flame-orange hair flopped over his eyes. He sat next to a boy who looked like Fleetfoot, but his white hair had light purple streaks, instead of ice blue.

"That'th my brother he'th talking to, Dark Shooter, he'th the only one who careth about me, mom and dad don't 'cauthe of my lithp." Fleetfoot commented

"My parents are both muggles, I'm the only wizard." Soarin told them

"Our mom was a witch, but dad isn't." Rainbow said, and Daring began poking at her eggs, stirring them around on the plate.

"Is something wrong?" Spitfire asked

"Mom died a few years after she gave birth to our little sister, Scootaloo." Daring explained

"Oh, i'm so sorry." Spitfire said

"Its okay, you didn't know." Rainbow responded, just as Professor McGonnagal walked up, passing them their schedules.

"We've got Herbology first, then Potions, then Defense Against the Dark Arts before lunch," Daring told them, scanning the parchment.

"Sounds like a good day, hopefully." Rainbow said, as they got up to head to Herbology.

They had Herbology with the Hufflepuffs, who were eager to greet the others.

"Fluttershy!" Rainbow said, hugging her best friend

"Hey Applejack, was it?" Rainbow asked, letting go of Fluttershy

"Yep, and those are mah cousins Pinkie Pie, Surprise, an' High Winds." the girl said, nodding to a girl giggling with another two girls and a boy with curly brown hair.

"Pretty neat how most families get put in the same houses, huh?" Spitfire commented

"Must be because they have similar traits." Soarin said, shrugging.

After Herbology, where they learned about the dangers of Devil's Snare, they trooped off to Potions. Their teacher was Professor Zecora, who was very nice, and began the lesson with description of what they were expected to accomplish in that year. The only downside was that the Slytherins were in their class. A Slytherin named Lightning Dust kept making rude comments about Zecora's rhyming under her breath.

"I wish i knew a curse to make her shut up." Rainbow muttered to the others

"I know one, hold on." a Gryffindor that they recognized as Night Glider said, pulling out her wand of blackthorn and aiming it at Lightning Dust from under the table. "Langlock." she hissed, and Lightning Dust suddenly fell silent, unable to speak.

The group all sniggered softly. After Potions, they went back upstairs from the dungeons to Defense Against the Dark Arts. Their teacher was none other than Harry Potter, the boy who lived. He'd taken up this job because he was the most knowledgeable about Defense Against the Dark Arts that a person could be.

"All right, settle down."  Professor Potter said to the Gryffindors and Ravenclaws. "Now, most of you know who I am, but for those of you who don't I'm Harry James Potter, but you might know me as The Chosen One or The Boy Who Lived." Professor Potter said, pushing back his black hair to reveal the lightning scar on his forehead.

Practically everyone in the room gasped.

"Now, I'm here to teach you Defense Against the Dark Arts. Some of the spells I'm going to try to teach you are normally far much more advanced then what you should be able to do, but I believe in starting early, so you're able to defend yourself." Professor Potter told them

"I don't expect you all to do this correctly in one day, but I want you to at least understand how to do the spells, because out there," he pointed to the Hogwarts Gate through the window, "is the real thing, where sometimes the only thing between you and death is your wand, your wits, and your courage. I know that you can do this, whether it takes days, months, or years for you to accomplish." He finished, smiling kindly at them.

Professor Potter then started them on the disarming charm, he had them pair up and try to disarm each other. Professor Potter walked among them, correcting a few of them with gentle suggestions.

"Expelliarmus!" Rainbow shouted at Daring, who she'd partnered with.

Daring's rowan wand flew out of her hand.

"Good job Miss. Dash" Professor Potter said "Now, did everyone see her technique? try it like that, though not everyone will have the reaction time needed, i'd also like you to now try to block the attack, the charm's 'Protego,' now let's try." He said.

Defense Against the Dark Arts would soon become their favorite class, and their first day was going great.

So, for the second chapter, I wanted to describe a few of the character's backgrounds, as well as highlight some classes that were not really touched upon in the books (as well as my favorite one, Care of Magical Creatures, which will appear in the next chapter).

By the way, in my story, Harry takes the job as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher because they need one, while he is studying to become an Auror, so he can pay for food and things like that. He and Ginny are still together. Kingsley Shacklebolt is Minister for Magic, like announced in book 7, and Hermione is his apprentice while her boyfriend Ron is also studying to be an Auror.
