Our last class was with Mr. Mathews. Honestly the best class of the day. I mean he teaches us real stuff. Stuff that's actually useful to use in our lives. Granite it could get a bit boring at times when he would go in-depth about history.
"See you at home daddy!" Riley smiled gleefully, as did I.
"See you soon ladies" Corey smiled as he packed up his things.
"Alright let's hurry home so I can take a nap" I looked at Riley making an exaggerated expression of exhaustion on my face.
"Maya if you sleep when we get home you won't be able to sleep tonight" She warned.
I laughed opening the school doors for her. "Please, Riles once I close my eyes I'm out like a light every time"
"You better be or els I'm gonna use Oggies plastic bat to knock you out no matter how many times it takes" she pointed at me arching an eye brow.
"Is the one and only Riley Mathews threatening to hit me with a plastic bat" I chuckled.
"Shut up!" She grabbed my hand and I felt those butterflies inside my stomach begin to fly again.
We complained about the crazy amount of home work we had been given, and it was only the first day. That walk home I just felt normal. Just a normal teenager walking home school. The best feeling in the world.
"Just be lucky we don't have to gym anymore" Riley laughed unlocking her apartment door.
"I bet you were the most lazy student there"
"You bet. I'm not gonna get my self all sweaty and gross, and stay like that for the rest of the day!" She defended herself.
I laughed stetting my bag next the to the door. Looking up I saw my mother standing at the kitchen table with Shawn and Topanga. My smile dropped and I stood there silently. I didn't know what to say. I had nothing to say to her.
"What's going on mom?" Riley asked.
"Why don't you girls sit down and we can explain" Topanga instructed us in a firm but calming tone.
I followed Riley to the couch and stayed silent. I felt Riley put her hand over mine. I wish she could have held me to calm my anxiety more.
"Maya I want you to come back home with me" my mother said innocently.
"Where's Shawn? This is ridiculous" I ask. I could hear the anger inside beginning to show in my voice.
"Shawn was going to be here but he had to stay late at work" she said as she walked closer to us with Topanga. "He agreed that it's time you come back home."
"I'm not going back to that place you call a home" I spat. "Your a monster. They you've treated me ever since my dad left I'v just been your punching bag. The person you blame for everything that goes wrong in life!"
"Maya" Topanga began but I cut her off.
"No!" I yelled "You don't understand what it's like to live with her. All she does is drink and beat me. That's all I'v known!"
"Baby I'm trying to get better. I'm going to stop drinking. I just want my daughter back" my mother pleaded.
"I'v heard that before. Your gonna give up the next day and back to your horrible ways" I gritted.
Topanga put her arm around my mother to comfort her. "Maya, I'v talked to your mother and she seems very genuine about this. I'v even given her a name of a local AA group that she can go to."
I huffed. For some reason I believed my mom. I always did. Every time she said she was going to get better I wanted to believe her. I just wanted my real mother back. "Fine. But one condition. If you mess up I'm leaving you for good. I can't keep going through this."
"Maya Relapses happen to everyone, but that doesn't mean they'll continue their actions forever" Topanga said.
Riley squeezed my hand looking at me softly "She has a point. No matter what I'll always be here, we'll always be here."
I shakily let out a simple "Fine."
"Great. Let's get you packed up and we can head home" my mother smiled.
I got up and left with Riley to her room. I silently gathered my clothes shoving them in the same backpack I had ran away with.
Riley stood there watching me worried. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine" I whispered.
"No your not."
I turned to her with tears begging to form. "I'm scared Riles."
She rushed towards me and I was instantly in her tight embrace.
My sobs shook my body "living there was horrible. I don't wanna go back."
Riley rubbed circles around my back to calm me down. "I know, but I'll see at school and you can text me twenty four seven. You were there for me, now let me be there for you."
Her words meant the world to me. Never in my life had a trust someone so much. Never have I believed someone's words much. "Riley why are you so amazing" I asked beginning to quiet my sobs.
"Because your amazing" she said softly.
I hugged her tighter and we stayed there for what seemed like minuets before she pulled away.
She brushed my hair out of my face "Now, let's finish packing alright, and you can text me when your home."
I was sacred but knowing that she and I were under the same night sky gave me strength.
