"Honey I made your lunch" my mother stopped me before I rushed out the door to meet Riley.
I turned to her as she held out a rolled up brown paper bag. I stared at her dead eyed not knowing what to say. "Uh, thanks."
"I'll see you when you get home" she smiled and I took the bag.
"We'll see" I muttered under my breath leaving.
I shoved the paper back into backpack and rushed down the stairs and out the front doors happy to see a smiling Riley.
"How was your first night?" She asked.
I hesitated for a quick second remembering the mess I had made last night. "It's was good. Just slept" I smiled.
She grabbed my hand and we headed to school. She made me feel alright, but regret what I had done last night. She didn't need to know, but I wish she did so I could just spill my emotional guts to her and have her hold me as I cried, like what had happened once before.
"How was your night?" I asked turning the subject off of me.
"I was out like a light" she laughed "my dad said he came in this morning and found me snoring!"
See Maya, she wouldn't have answered even if you called. Your stupid. "Well, that doesn't surprise me at all."
The walk to school was short since I lived closer than Riley did. We talked about the weather and our classes. Pretty much just basic stuff, which I didn't mind. I wasn't particularly in a talking mood or feeling as happy as I was the other day. My arm burned as my selves touched my skin every now and then, and thoughts of coming home later today swarmed my head blurring out Riles voice.
"Maya!" Riley's voice snapped me out of my head. I hadn't even noticed she had let go of my hand to open the school door for me. I had completely spaced out. She stood there looking at me with confusion.
I faked a reassuring smile and walked in. "Sorry. I just spaced out a bit. I'm a little tired" I told her adjusting the straps my backpack.
"I could tell. You just stayed silent the whole time. I didn't know if I should have disturbed you or not so I just let you be" she said awkwardly.
Im already disturbed but I wish you would have brought me out of my head so I would be a little less disturbed.
"Maya! Riley!" Farkles voice rang from behind.
He was holding a big cardboard box, joined with everyone els over by the lockers. They all smiled gesturing us to come over.
"Come on" Riley smiled at me and I followed behind her.
Lucas smiled "Morning ladies."
"Morning! How's everyone doing?" Riley asked.
"What's in the big box brainiac?" I teased Farkle.
He gripped his box right. "One, I take that as a compliment. Two, it's me and Smakles science project."
"It's the about the study of our solar system. We're gonna crush those losers!" Smakle grinned deviously as she said the that last sentence.
"Man I wanna be in advanced science." Zay huffed. "All these weird little project you all do. All I do is just sit in class and listen.
"We all have our own strengths Zay, and science is Smakles and Farkles strength" Riley tried cheering Zay up.
"Yeah buddy!" Lucas patted Zays shoulder. "Remember when you won first place at the states rodeo? You showed all those racist hillbillies up!"
I was impressed that Zay could do that. I had seen rodeos before on TV and could never imagine doing something like that. "Nice man!" I said giving him a high five him.
Zay fixed his posture lifting his back and shoulders up. "Thank You. Your all right."
The bell for first class rung and we all dispersed from our circle. "See you at lunch guys!" Riley waved.
The entire day I was in and out of my own head. Everything felt like a blur until art class. I sat in my normal seat waiting for a joyful Riley to appear in the door way. Not even moments later there she was skipping towards me.
"Hey cutie" she said setting her stuff down.
I could feel my cheeks burning up as she said that. What did she mean by cutie? Was she flirting with me, or being nice? I couldn't tell anymore. I took my self away from those thoughts and quickly hid my blush.
"I wouldn't say I'm cute. You on the other hand are" I grinned firing back to see what her reaction was.
I instantly saw the slight redness appear on her face also. "You seem to be feeling better" she arched an eye brow.
I huffed. "Now that your here I am."
"Alright class let's work on portraits of each other. Team up with a partner and get to work." The teacher said taking a seat.
Me and Riley looked at each other already knowing that we would be partners.
"I'll go get the paint!" She exclaimed excitedly.
"Of course" I laughed following her to grab a pencil.
She looked at me questionably. "Am I that dull? No color?"
"Don't worry, I'm just doing a rough sketch today. I'll add the color once I finish" I smile at her assuringly.
She shrugged and we headed back to our seats. I picked up my art aisle and placed it in font of her along with my stool. I sat down and looked at her, she looked back up at me.
She leaned closer to me whispering "what are you staring at?"
I leaned closer to her, our face only inches apart. "You dummy. I have to make sure I don't mess up on drawing your beautiful face."
Riley nodded with an expression of determination spread across her face. "I'll do that to" she whispered.
We both regained our distance with each other and began drawing. I'd look up at her after I had finished sketching small sections of her face. I needed this to be perfect. I needed to get every single detail perfect just like her. Riley would look up at me and would giggle quickly and look back at her paper. During that whole time my mind had been more intact than it had been all day. I had nearly finished the upper part of her face when the bell rang. I set my pencil down and Riley rushed over to see my art.
"Let me see, let me see!" she repeated.
I quickly covered the paper with my entire body. "No!" I chuckled "not until its done!"
"Don't take your art work home class. This is only for you to work on here. I'll collect your art and keep them safe until next class" we heard the teacher say.
"You go first. I don't want you trying to sneak a peak at my art work ms. nosey."
Riley threw her backpack over her shoulder and huffed holding her hands up "I'm walking away. I'm not looking at Maya Heart's art work."
"Keep going till you get to the door and the paints won't get hurt" I said sounding tough.
"Not the paint!" she screeched.
I laughed heading towards her. "Come on lets go dummy."
As we walked to the cafeteria Riley shakily spoke up. "Um, so I was thinking maybe we could eat on the roof top? It's just, theres so many people in there its to much for me." She looked down avoiding eye contact with me.
"Of course its fine. It's much more peaceful up there anyways" I rubbed her back lightly. "You go get your food and I'll meet you at the ladder. I have to go grab my lunch from my locker."
"Your mom made you lunch?"
"Yeah. I guess its something she's trying to do to make up for all the crap she's done to me. Like that'll fix it." I scoffed.
