Being a waitress at the Siren's Nightclub wasn't easy. Most nights, it was just your average audience of rich Gothamites who wanted to get drunk and have fun. Sometimes, almost rarely, some poor servers would be stuck at work while their bosses, Barbara and Tabitha, dealt with some 'issues'. That usually ended with them paying one of their servers enough to dump that issue out into the harbor.
Fortunately, it wasn't one of those nights. Y/N didn't focus too much on what was going on, but she knew that the guy performing was some sort of magician or something. After going back out to serve patrons their drinks, Y/N realized he was a hypnotist. He had a man balancing himself on the back frame of a chair, a woman eating a tub of ice cream like a fiend, and another woman literally acting like a chicken. She indulged herself with a few seconds of distraction but before she knew it, Y/N was blinded by the spotlight.
"You."
After her vision settled, Y/N realized the hypnotist was referring to her.
"Will this young lady make her way to the stage with some empty glasses while I take our two wonderful participants out of their hypnosis?" The hypnotist turned to the two women on stage and reversed their hypnosis, both of them running off the stage in embarrassment.
Y/N looked to Barbara and Tabitha, who were drinking together, for approval. They gave her a nod and continued to drink. With their permission granted, she retrieved the empty glasses on a tray.
So, she went. Y/N walked past the audience and onto the stage, feeling all the more uncomfortable as everyone's eyes were on her. It was a far cry from being ignored as a server.
"Young lady, my name is Jervis Tetch. What's your name?" Jervis pulled her in closer to the microphone so she could introduce herself.
"My name is Y/N L/N."
The audience gave them a small round of applause before waiting for Tetch to hypnotize her.
"Well, Y/N, I need you to stay still and look into my eyes. Not around them, not above them, but deep into their center. Now, sleep."
Just like that, Y/N was out like a light.
"You are completely relaxed, and are becoming weightless." The ticking of his pocket watch numbed her down and put her consciousness to sleep. It gave her the visceral feeling of actually being weightless.
"Are you ready to do something impossible", Jervis asked, satisfied with the dead, far off look in Y/N's eyes.
"Yes", she replied.
With that said, Jervis snapped his pocket watch shut. He took the glasses off her tray and arranged them in a pyramid- two glasses on the bottom supporting the last bottle on top. "Stand on the glasses."
Y/N obeyed, promptly standing on the top glass on just one foot. The audience gasped in astonishment.
Barbara couldn't help but to lean in closer, curiosity consuming her. Still, Tabitha reminded her they were running a business. "Tetch, if anything happens to Y/N, or my audience-" Barbara was cut off by the ever-so confident hypnotist.
"Don't worry, my dear. Y/N is weightless. She couldn't break the glasses if she tried. Just look." Jervis redirected his attention to Y/N. "Y/N, be a dear, and hop on one foot."
Surely, she'd break the glass. Surely, the glass would shatter and make a mess. The pain would be sufficient to break her out of her trance ensue chaos.
But none of that happened.
Y/N hopped on one foot, not even causing the smallest of cracks on the glasses. The audience cheered at Jervis' superability.
"Please, give a round of applause to my lovely participant", Jervis motioned towards Y/N before beckoning off the glasses and to the center of the stage alongside him. "Three, two, one."
Upon the end of the countdown, Y/N's eyes lit up. She was back from whatever he put her under. Confusion struck her face as she quickly scanned the audience and her bosses, then the glasses on the floor. She looked at Tetch. "What did I do?"
"Nothing, my dear, just the impossible", Jervis replied. He picked up the glasses, put them back on the tray, and pet her shoulder. "You were a lovely assistant, but I'm sure Ms. Kean and Ms. Galavan would prefer you safe and off the stage." So, he bid her goodbye and closed his show.
Y/N set her tray down by the dish sink and took a seat. She called for one of her coworkers that she got along with once she saw them walk by. "By any chance, do you know what happened on that stage?" Y/N knew Jervis had a knack for making his participants do some pretty embarrassing stuff, but she couldn't recall what she did. It felt more like she blacked out.
"Nothing much, he had you balance yourself on one foot over some drinking glasses and hop around like an idiot." Her coworker snickered, before getting back up. "Don't worry, it's not super embarrassing. At least he didn't make you find him irresistible like he did with Ms.-You-Know-Who. Listen, I gotta go, but I'll see you later." They waved her goodbye and left.
Y/N sighed with relief and got back up. She washed the drinking glasses and went back out to take some more orders. "At least it wasn't anything bad", she thought to herself.
A/N: Ugh, this chapter took me so long to make.
