In this chapter, Y/N and the villain are still friends^^ The villains who are minors will have costumes cause they're still kids and they deserve it. Anyway since we can't go out for Halloween (at least not in the US), consider this a way to celebrate it vicariously! Happy spooky season!
📖 Bookworm 📖
- It was a heist.
- Again.
- This time, it was at some old mansion that formerly belonged to some old mobster that kicked the bucket not long ago.
- "He was a hoarder, but he was rich and the estate is vast. According to his financial records, he purchased a large number of rare, priceless books and documents", Mr. Scarlet announced to Y/N and the other bookworms.
- "You want us to sneak in and rob them blind, boss?", Y/N was confident that's where her boss was going.
- "Quite right, my dear!" He smiled proudly. "There will be an estate sale after the funeral. All of Gotham's snobs and his enemies will be there so it would behoove us to get there beforehand."
- That was the plan and they went along with it perfectly till they were all at the estate.
- Typesetter was waiting in the car while Devil's Printer and Pressman were going back and forth filling the Bookmobile with as many books as they could.
- Y/N and Mr. Scarlet were down in the basement, looking for anything they could pilfer that wasn't upstairs.
- It was cold, damp, and creepy. Great.
- "Alexander, don't you think we should get out of here?" Y/N asked as she followed him and cringed at the overall vibe. "We've been here for a while, and it's almost time for the sale to start- the staff won't be long.
- Alexander turned to face her, annoyed but he stopped once he heard a scratch and clear footsteps from inside the basement.
- "Did you hear that?" He turned away from her and shined his flashlight to find the source of the noise.
- Y/N stood there, wondering if her idiot bookworm of a boss had some sort of death wish.
- "You can't be serious, Scarlet. Have you ever seen Psycho? I don't want to find a mummified corpse." She tugged on his arm as she tried to nudge him towards the stairs but he continued to search for the continuous scratching.
- "What about a still beating heart, Y/N?", he joked as he went further into the darkness. "If you're worried, feel free to hold my hand. I promise nothing will happen- thief's honor."
- "I'm sure this is exactly what Mr. Edgar Allen Poe had in mind when he wrote that story, wiseass." Y/N just wanted to leave but she couldn't just leave Alexander there. Regardless, she held his hand gently. "Thief's honor."
- Y/N continued to follow him and watch his back as the searched the seemingly endless basement.
- She couldn't help but to feel like they were being watched closely.
- It wasn't until Alexander stepped on a hollow sounding tile that he stopped and attempted to pry the tile off.
- "I've a good feeling about this, my dear", Alexander said as he struggled with the tile, straining himself until it flew off and clattered on the floor.
- After the cobwebs and dust had settled, Y/N and Alexander peered into the pit.
- They felt their lunch come back up when an old skull stared back at them with empty eye sockets and an unhinged jaw. The rotted stench certainly didn't help either.
- Alexander scrambled to get up, quickly grabbed Y/N's hand, and booked it (no pun intended). They yelled at the bookworms to drop whatever loot they had on hand and just go!
- Once they left the estate's grounds, Y/N started laughing almost hysterically, much to Alexander's surprise.
- "Y/N, we've just uncovered human remains during a heist. Please tell me what you find so funny about that."
- "It'll sound silly but while you were off pretending to be some sort of investigator, I couldn't help but feel like we were being watched. You can't tell me you didn't feel anything when we were down there."
- Alexander rolled his eyes and playfully smacked her leg with a book. "Of all the ridiculous things you've said, this takes the cake. Ghosts? The mere implications of paranormal entities? Get real, Y/N."🇬🇧 Mad Mod 🇬🇧
- Honestly, why did he even agree to this?
- Neil knew better than to follow through with one of Y/N's stupid dares but he thought it was harmless at the time and he had nothing better to do.
- That's what he told her as he begrudingly followed her through the dank and creepy graveyard Y/N found on one of her walks.
- "Listen, love. Don't you think this is a bit uncool? Why would you ever want to hang out in some creepy place like this? I know some far out spots that'll be hosting some great parties", Neil suggested as he carefully maneuvered himself around the decayed and long forgotten tombstones.
- Y/N grinned. "Mr. Richards, you're not scared, are you?"
- The truth is Y/N just wanted to hang out with her best friend on Halloween, maybe gets some kicks out it so she figured a good old fashioned fright never hurt anyone.
- "Scared? That's hilarious, poppet." Neil denied her accusation. "I'm just saying that I'd much rather hang out with you at a party than here. For the love of God, these are brand new leather boots! I can't dirty them up here!"
- Y/N snickered. "You're about as unafraid as you are American, Neil. Admit that you're too chicken to even be here!"
- Neil quickly turned to face his insufferable friend. "Don't even joke like that, love." He contemplated accepting defeat until she called him a chicken.
- "Chicken? I'm not a chicken! I'll stay, just you watch." Neil huffed as he adjusted his collar.
- God, it was just too easy. Y/N smirked and shrugged at her friend's attitude. "Is that so?"
- "It is, actually. As a matter of fact, what do we do next?" Neil leaned against a decrepit looking crypt.
- "Well", Y/N mused as she fished a medium sized wooden box from her tote. "I've got a little game we can play..."
- Neil cringed. "This is the first time I hated hearing that...don't tell me it's what I think it is."
- "A Ouija board." Y/N confirmed as she spread a sheet down on the cold dead grass and took a seat.
- As Neil watched, she lit some candles and arranged the board, planchette, and some snacks she made. "Well?"
- Neil plopped himself across from her and looked down at the board. He'd been to countless college parties that had questionable turns so he was no stranger to the occult but that didn't stop him to saying a quick mental prayer.
- Y/N had already touched the planchette and he followed suit, taking a deep breath.
- "Is anyone here with us", Y/N asked. There was no noise and no response until a few seconds later and the planchette slowly dragged itself towards the 'YES' corner.
- Y/N appeared surprised but she continued, occasionally stealing glances at Neil who was more than focused on the board. "Can you tell us where you're from?"
- "I-N-F-E-R-N-U-M", Neil muttered softly. "Hell..." He translated before giving Y/N an irritated look. "Great. This is exactly how I planned my evening."
- Y/N ignored his dirty look. "Hell, huh? What's that like, dude?"
- "D-O-L-O-R", Neil groaned. "Pain. It means pain, Y/N. We shouldn't bother someone in pain which means we should leave." His stomach was flip flopping and he was certain if the flashlight was on him, she'd see he was sweating buckets.
- Still, Y/N continued. "You're in pain? Do you need anything?"
- Neil wanted to close his eyes and ignore the feeling of the planchette dragging itself but he couldn't bring himself to do it. His heart was rising to his throat as he sounded out the words he gathered. "Animabus...vestris...oh my god."
- Y/N looked at him quizzically. "What's wrong what does that mean?"
- "Y/N, you idiot, it means it wants our souls! I don't know why I ever agreed to this, dammit! We have to go now!" Neil couldn't stand being there anymore. He swore he felt the hair on his arms and the back of his neck rising.
- "Neil, just relax. It's all okay." Y/N put her hands up. The planchette stuck to her fingers. "It was rigged. Look, I'll show you." She took off the planchette and revealed a semi transparent dollop of glue where her fingers were.
- Neil was quiet for a while before he sighed and laid on the sheet. "You had me going for a while, love. It'll be hard getting me to forgive you, you know."
- Y/N smiled in relief as she laid beside him and kissed his cheek. "How about we get out of here and we go to your favorite pub? My treat."
- "That's a start, my dear." Neil smiled.
