Lukes P.O.V
I walked down the street towards the mango farm very anxiously. I didn’t know what to tell Maddie, if I should bring it up at all. Maybe I should keep it to myself for a bit. Find out what she wanted to tell me so bad. As I was making up my mind, I could see Maddie waiting for me at the fence, she waved and I waved back. I approached her with a smile and gave her a hug. She seemed tense.
We crawled through to the other side and sat down with our backs to the fence.
I turned my head towards her.
“Why did you need me to meet you here a.s.a.p.? “ I asked.
“It’s Julia...” she said not making eye contact. “She’s moving to Gold Coast…”
It hit me like a spaceship. So uncalled for. Gold Coast is pretty far from Melbourne… hard to stay close with someone when they’re that far away. I felt bad for Jai, what would he do. But I felt worse for Maddie, Julia was her everything.
“What?” I asked very confused. “Why?”
“Something with her dad’s job, I don’t know but she’s my only friend… “She trailed off.
“It’s ok, you have me and Jai and Beau, and we’re here for you. “ I said pulling her into a hug. She started crying into my shoulder.
“Luke, you don’t understand. I’m not popular. Julia is my only friend besides you and your brothers now. Before you, she was all I had. And I don’t know what I’ll do when she’s gone, you just need a girl friend sometimes….”
I nodded my head and held her close.
“You’re the only person who knows right now besides me and her. I haven’t told my family yet and she hasn’t told Jai. Please don’t tell him. She wants to do it herself…. I just need someone to talk to right now.” She admitted.
“I won’t say anything, but hey look at me” I tilted her chin up so our eyes met. I wiped away the tears on her face. “You’ve got all us janoskians , we’re here for you. And you know you’re welcome over at my house anytime. My mum loves you and you just come over whenever you want ok?”
A smile crept across her face and she buried her chin in my neck, my arms still wrapped around her.
“Thanks Luke” she said sweetly.
We sat there the rest of the night, chatting about pointless things until she had to go home. I walked her home, hugged her goodnight and then started for my house. I had to think of a way to get that mango farm. Maddie could not find out about that right now, she would completely shut down. Not with the news she just got. I’ll call the number it said tomorrow and find out what’s happening with it.
****THE NEXT DAY****
“Hey Mum,” I said, walking into the kitchen. It was only 8 in the morning but I couldn’t fall back asleep.
“Yes dear?” she asked, looking up from the newspape.
“I have a problem…” I started. Honestly, I had two problems; but I could only talk to my mom about one.
“What is it Luke?" she asked with a confused look on her face.
I took in a deep breath and let it out.
"Maddie’s favorite place on earth is up for sale and I can't let someone else buy it and tear it all down. She would be crushed, and this isn't exactly the highest point in her life right now ..." I trailed off thinking about how sad she was last night.
"Are you talking about the mango farm you guys always hang out at?"
I nodded.
"Oh... That's not good," she said thinking, "well, have you looked into it? Is there a phone number you could call and find out some information?"
