"Poppy really I was there; he mocked the hippogriff- he got what he deserved." Madame Pomfrey, the school nurse had just stormed into the teacher's lounge, hands raised- howling curses at Hagrid who was just standing there looking sheepishly at the floor. I was trying to placate the furious woman to no avail, Draco Malfoy had been carried into the Hospital Wing a few hours ago by a shocked Hagrid and myself (well Hagrid did the carrying, I just shouted at the students to move out of our way).
The foolish boy had taunted a Hippogriff, proud and easily angered it had lashed out, sharpening his claws on Malfoy's flesh. I had to hold my breath to stop myself drinking him dry where he stood but I controlled my urges, and he had managed to make a proper fool of himself.
"Poppy please calm down." The three of us turned around to Dumbledore, who had obviously been standing there unnoticed for some time. He looked at Hagrid and walked over to where he now sat, reaching to put a hand reassuringly on his shoulder. "Hagrid the fault was not yours," he looked rather pointedly at me, "and I am sure Mr Malfoy has an explanation for his behaviour." I looked down shamefully. Dumbledore knew that I held a grudge against Draco's father; Lucius, because he had been the one to first sign the petition to have me locked away. I could not, would not, forgive him for the eighteen years of my life that had been spent in prison. Dumbledore continued, "But Poppy I am sure there is nothing to worry about, you are by far the best person he could have to care for him," She had long stopped shouting now and she was smiling sheepishly at the headmaster.
"Yes Albus," she turned to Hagrid, "I'm sorry Hagrid- it was unkind of me to blame you so relentlessly." Dumbledore nodded his head and turned to me, he glanced at me and I understood that he wanted to speak about something; he just had that look on his face. He left the room and I followed, once outside I expected to receive a lecture but he was silent. "What?" I asked as he silently stared at me.
"I thought that it would be obvious, you didn't drain the boy. How?" One of his eyebrows shot up.
"I’d been wondering the same thing headmaster, I’m unsure whether or not it’s because of Remus, but I'm sure it's a good thing that I didn’t." He smiled sadly.
"You misunderstand me I don't doubt that what you did was morally correct, I’m merely astounded by your control." In truth it had puzzled me as well. I hadn't drank blood in over five months now, since before the start of the school year, I was holding out for the holidays in a few days' time. I should be dying of thirst. Yet I wasn't, my thirst was quenched; held back by what I assumed was the unappetising smell Remus issued, but thinking about it, I hadn’t spoken to him for some time what with the full moon being this past week. Something suspicious was going on. Dumbledore spoke, "By the look on your face I would wager a guess that you are as confused at these events as I." He smiled and placed a hand on my shoulder, “I've also spoken to Remus, he tells me that you've been teaching his classes and that you're doing a good job of it. You're also spoken of highly amongst the other staff and the students." He smiled, "That means you are doing your job well, you can smile." I let out a little laugh at his enthusiasm. "That's better. Now I think you would like to speak to Remus so I shall leave you. I trust we'll speak soon." With that he walked off, I however was too busy walking as quickly as possible down the hallways out into the chilling autumn air, and down the long path; following my nose to the Black Lake. That was where I found Lupin.
"You really shouldn't be out here when it's this cold," as he heard me I could see the corner of his mouth curl up from where I stood; I leapt down the bank and ran to where he stood. "Did Dumbledore find you?" He asked as he turned to face me. He looked ragged and tired, more so than usual.
"Yeah he found me. He was just wondering why I haven't killed anyone yet." He smiled at that and I found it in me to let out a little laugh.
"You look tired." It surprised me that he had said it rather than me.
"I suppose I should be really," I looked into his sad eyes, a sigh slipped out from between my lips. "It's not easy teaching people I want to feed on, also this disguise takes more work than I care to admit." His brow creased with worry.
"My dear you can't keep this up forever. One day you will slip up and you’ll do something I know you will regret," he suddenly smiled slyly and looked around at the lake and the bushes behind us. "If you want you can change back here for a while and I’ll meet you in the forest in a few minutes," I wasn't so sure about it but it sounded okay.
"Okay, but keep watch while I change." He chuckled and walked out into the bushes to watch for any people.
