I woke up in what I presumed was the hospital wing. The floor was shining white and the bed sheets were of the same colour. Everything was unitarily set out and there was a clear goblet at my bedside filled with a deep maroon liquid. I tried to move my hands but they were held down by invisible restraints, my legs were similarly bound.
It must have been late at night because there was only a little light entering through the large windows, one was open and letting in a chilling breeze that helped me wake up properly. I assessed my situation and replayed back the events of my last conscious moment. Snape had been on the floor and there had been an intoxicating smell in the air. That smell had long since gone, as had my thirst, which meant that I had fed.
"You scared me." I turned my head suddenly in surprise; I hadn't heard anyone in the room. It was Lupin and he looked bad, older somehow; and more tired than I’d ever seen him. However he seemed uninjured. I let out a sigh of relief. "I thought I'd hurt you." He came over to the side of my bed and knelt down. "No you didn't, I'm sorry that I couldn't stop you though." He was apologizing to me? This was confusing.
"You shouldn't be sorry Remus, I was too confident." I sighed again, the back of my throat felt dry but bearably so, despite the faint bittersweet taste that was still in my mouth. "Um, Remus? Who did I feed off?" I smiled at him but he frowned and looked away.
"Me. I know that it is not the same as human blood but I didn't want you to hurt someone." He looked guilty.
"Remus what you did was the right thing; I just wish that all this had never happened to begin with. I'm sorry I hurt you." It was my turn to look guilty now, he reached out though as I looked down and lifted my chin. "Let me release your bindings and we can talk properly." Lifting his wand he flicked it and I felt the invisible ropes holding me down disappear. I stretched and sat up in the bed. "How are the students?" I asked as he pulled a chair closer to the bed.
"They're fine," he answered curtly. "Although you did cause a bit of a commotion with some of the prefects that were walking the halls at the time," he smiled weakly, "We convinced them that a vampire had broken into the school, your injuries are justified by the fight you had with the vampire while protecting the students." We sat there in silence for a while he looked at me as if I was going to die and had a regretful look in his eyes. I decided to break the silence. "So how long was I out for?" It was a sensible question, I had no idea how long I had been unconscious for.
"You were asleep for about a week. Full moon is next week so I was hoping that you would wake up sooner rather than later." He shook his head. "Poppy wants to keep you in here for the rest of the week. Dumbledore however thinks it’s best that you walk around and regain your strength." He looked thoughtfully at the curtain surrounding us and sighed. "And I am sure that Severus wants you to stay here until he finds a way to get you locked up by the Ministry." I winced when he finished his sentence. I had forgotten about Snape.
"How is he?" I asked.
Lupin snorted gently, "Complaining more than ever that you can't be trusted near so many people, but physically he is alright. I think there must be a part of your mind that stops you from causing any permanent damage to people you don't consider dangerous because he received only flesh wounds, mostly from the impact with that window." He smiled reassuringly, I could tell he was trying to cheer me up but there was a question gnawing at my mind that I felt compelled to ask. "Remus what was it that set me off? Why did I go into a frenzy?" A show of emotions flashed over his face, eventually his features took on a deep look of concern. "I think that you know. After all you could smell him couldn't you?" He was right I could remember that smell. It made me thirsty just thinking about it.
"It was Sirius." I muttered just loud enough for him to hear. "He came back to see me?" Lupin nodded his head and sighed.
"It seems that he found out you were here." I could feel tears welling in my eyes at the knowledge that Sirius still loved me and I stood as Lupin moved around to hug me. My joints felt stiff and my muscles were aching in several places, the spell that Dumbledore had used to sedate me had left no mark but I still felt slightly drowsy. I remembered the goblet on the bedside table and realised that it was dragon's blood that filled it to the brim. It didn't taste as good as human blood, or werewolf blood for that matter, but it had properties that made my kind placid. Needless to say I wouldn't be drinking anymore of that. When our short embrace ended I lied back on the pallet bed just in time for Madame Pomfrey to come bustling through the curtain and tell me that I had to stay in bed for at least another day before walking around.
