Honestly, I wish this war would just end. My father put me in training camp to become the best soldier on this side of the country. I guess you could say it’s in my blood. My great grandfather was the king’s loyal advisor before he died. And his son fought off the “Roaches”. That’s what we call the people living on the other side of the country. Because they live in garbage and are covered in filth.

Then my father fought off roaches as well. Now it’s my turn, to fight, be a hero and pass on the family tradition of kicking roach butt. If this war ended tomorrow, I would be so glad. All I’ve ever done was train. Even as a kid, my dad would take me through obstacle courses. He taught me how to shoot a gun by the time I was ten. My friends went through the same thing. Only thing is they actuallywanted to do it. I was forced into it.

“Hey Isaac you coming or what?!”

“Yeah don’t tell us you’re still sleeping!”

I hear that almost every morning around eight. And it’s always the same idiots. Tommy White and Benny Wallace. My closest friends and comrades.

“Come on Isaac! Sargent is goanna be mad if we don’t make on time today.” Tommy shouted.

“I’m coming, you idiots!” I shout back.

“Well hurry then. If we’re not there in line by ten Sargent will have our tails!” Benny shouted.

It was a short walk from my house to the training facility. But we were still late. Just like Benny said, Sargent was pissed of something awful.

“And just where were you, you three trainees?!”

“Uh… well we were…”

“Enough, since you were not here this morning you’ll spend the rest of the day cleaning the rifles. Am I understood?!”

“Sir yes sir!”

“Well something crawled up his ass this morning.” Tommy said.

“Yeah us you idiot.” I said

“Well I for one am not going to enjoy this punishment. I really need to be with the other medics.” Said Benny.

“Why do you want to be a medic anyways?” Tommy asked.

“Cause’ I still want to heal people. I just want to do it while wearing the uniform. And if I see any roaches, I shoot their asses to bits.”

“You have a weird sense of humor Benny old boy.” I said.

We made it to the gun room and started cleaning every single rifle. Around noon I heard a loud voice coming from the visitor’s gate. And I could tell right then and there that it was my father. Sargent came into the gun room and ordered me to go to the visitor’s gate. As I was leaving Tommy and Benny were humming the theme song from “Jaws”.

I get to the gate and there’s my dad, with his unamused face.

“Hi dad.”

“Isaac, do you think that I look happy to see you?”

“No sir, you don’t.”

“So how is it that you managed to arrive late to training, again

“Look I was just late by like five minutes. No big deal.”

“‘No big deal’? I think this is a very big deal! I expect more from you now that you’re fulfilling the family legacy. From now on you’ll spend nights here, so you won’t be late anymore. Am I understood young man?”
