Battle Fences

Isaac

     I walk through the doors of the medical center and I see Benny.  I also see doctors taking Gemma into a room. 

"Gemma!"

Benny stopped me after they closed the door. 

"Dude calm down.  Relax! They're taking her into surgery. There's a bullet still in her."

     I almost lost it. My heart broke into a thousand pieces.  I couldn't take it anymore. 

"This is your fault. If she hadn't met you none of this would've happened. " her father said.

That pushed my buttons.

" Well I'm sorry if our love for one another got in the way of your 'master plans' for Gemma.  Did you even ask her if that was the life she wanted? "

     " Look here you don't have the right to talk to me that way. Don't just assume that I don't know my own daughter. "

" That's the point, you dont! You have eyes but you don't see how amazing she is.  She's everything to me. As cliché as it sounds it's true. I'd do anything to make sure that she's safe and happy."

     That took her father by surprise. 

" I said the same thing when I was your age.  It was when I met my wife. I'm sorry I just want what's best for her. She's more like her mother than I thought. "

     Then the doctor came from the other side of the door. 

" Are you the family? " He asked. 

" Yes I am. " her father replied.

"Then I need to talk to you.  Uh you two can go in and see her if you wish. She's sleeping but she'll wake up in a couple of hours."

     I started running through the doors but Gemma's dad pulled me aside.

" Im greatfull for your help.  And if this war continues you can be an honorary roach. "

" Thank you sir."

" That won't be necessary Slade. "

My father was here! This is bad this is very very bad.

"Look Roth I don't care what you say this boy saved my daughter. He's a hero."

" I couldn't agree more. "

What did my father just say?

     " He certainly proved to be a hero.  Stood up to his own father for the one he loves,  risked his own life trying to save her. No doubt not taking his own life into consideration.  I'm very proud to call him my son. "

     Im sure my father didn't just say that.  The man disowned me last night.  But I'll take that as an apology. 

" Thanks dad. " I said. 

" Slade consider this war over."

" Agreed Roth. "

They shook hands and just like that there was peace.

     " Isaac!  Do you want to see her or not? " " Oh right."

I ran into Gemma's room and saw her laying on the bed with a dressing on her wound.
