These Ties That Bind

After that night in the hospital I avoided the gang for three weeks. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. I didn't have classes with any of them and I could get home before they could stop me. The only one who had been somewhat difficult was Two-Bit since he wouldn't stop calling. He told me that Pony and Johnny went back to the church and that Soda and Dallas both got out of the hospital but, mainly he was just cracking jokes and laughing by himself over them. I could have picked up but, I just kept hitting ignore. I wasn't ready to talk to them and I didn't want to. My mother was happy with my decision, even if it meant I felt more alone than ever.  What my mom wasn't happy about was Two-Bit Matthews and Dallas Winston showing up at my house at 7 AM asking for me.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, watching my mother as she gave them a cold hard glare.

"You can only ignore us for so long." Two-Bit smiled, tapping his feet on the hardwood floors.

"Don't you miss us, baby?" Dallas tilted his head at me, demanding an answer.

"I'm ignoring your calls for a reason." I directed the conversation back to Two-Bit.

I didn't even know if Dallas remembered me at the hospital. Part of me hoped he did but, the bigger part hoped he didn't.

"Oh, just come to Buck's tonight. Soda and Steve ain't gonna' be there anyways."

"Fine. As long as they aren't there." There was no point in arguing with either of them, they would keep bugging me until they got their way.

Dallas threw his arm around me, "That's my girl."

To be honest, I froze at his touch. The last time we had talked was three weeks ago when he was out of his mind high but, if he noticed my stiffness, he ignored it. At least until my mom walked into the room and nearly dropped dead.

"Get your hands off my daughter." Her voice full of venom.

"Sorry mam." His words would have been kind if they weren't dripping in sarcasm.

"I think it's time for you two to leave." She opened the door for them but, I walked right along with the two.

I knew she wouldn't chase me. She would never admit it but, she's afraid of them.

"Well that didn't do anything good for our reputation." Two-Bit laughed as we rounded the corner.

"Our reputation couldn't get any worse, even if we tried." Dallas kicked the rocks in the road.

"Especially yours." Two-Bit added.

"How are you feeling, Dallas?" I asked, looking at the healing gash down his jawline.

"Just fine." His voice was monotone, flat.

There was an awkward pause and I can hear Two-Bit laugh under his breath, "Well just because he doesn't remember doesn't mean I don't. Those walls in the hospital are thinner than paper."

I nearly smacked the skin right off the back of Two-Bit's head but, he dodges me.

"I don't remember what?" Dallas asked.

"Nothin'." Two-Bit looked away.

"Don't get wise." Dallas said, clicking the switchblade in his pocket.

He wouldn't dare use it on anyone in the gang but, the threat is there.

"Put that away Dallas." I whispered, quietly begging him.

Dallas just shook his head and slashed the bark in the tree closest to him. I'd hate to know what else that blade had cut.
