Because, if you could love someone, and keep loving them, without being loved back...then that love had to be real. It hurt too much to be anything else.-Sarah Cross, Kill Me Softly

Tim and I headed out to the Dingo, mainly because it was something to do. I didn't go to The Dingo often. There was always fights breaking out and more often than not the police show up. Still, Tim knew the owner and said he could get us free drinks but The Dingo was under new management after the other guy was caught smuggling drugs.

"If Dal were here that woulda' worked out for sure." Tim scowled at the bartender who just continued cleaning his glasses.

"Are ya'll talking about Dally Winston?" A red head sitting at the bar spoke up.

When I turned and saw her I immediately recognized her. It was Cherry Valance and the only reason I knew that was because Dallas would never shut his trap about her. I could tell why, she was the prettiest girl in Tulsa.

"Yeah, what's it to you?" Tim growled at her.

She shrugged, surprisingly not intimidated by him. "It's nothing to me. I was just wondering is all."

"You know where he is?" I asked, wondering what the hell a soc like her was doing on this side of town.

The Dingo was a rough place and she certainly didn't belong.

There was slight hesitation in her voice before she spoke which gave her away, "No."

"You know something, broad?" Tim asked again, standing up from the bar stool to fully face Cherry.

"I told you, he ain't mean a thing to me." She was crazy to be lying to Tim like that.

"Look doll, you're a lousy liar. It's only gonna make things harder for you if you keep this up."

Cherry didn't flinch, "Why are you so interested in Dallas?"

My stomach clenched when I heard her call him that.

I spoke before Tim did, "Because he's my boyfriend and he's his best friend. So where is he?"

Cherry smiled and looked me up and down, "So, you're Scarlett. Well why didn't you say so?" She looked around and then leaned in like she was telling us a secret, "Come on, I'll show you where Dally is."

She hopped out of the bar stool and Tim and I had no option but to follow her. When we exited The Dingo she jumped daintily over a puddle of beer, her light blue dress flouncing as she went. I knew which car was hers. She had the second nicest one at school, right behind me.

When she revved the engine she turned back to us, "Look, I don't like to be sellin' Dally out like this but I know he misses you, even if he denies it."

"Just drive." Tim growled, angry that a soc knew where his best friend was and he didn't.

Cherry drove for what seemed like six years and was talking the whole time but I can't remember a word she said. I couldn't think about anything but Dallas. Eventually, she pulled up to a house so small it could barely pass for a shed. I wouldn't have looked for Dallas there, truth be told. I didn't even know the cabin existed.

She pulled up quietly and shut off her lights, "Well, he should be in there. He's going to be mighty angry at me for ratting him out."

Tim and I both hopped out of the car without another word. There was nothing to say. I didn't want to thank her and so I didn't. I wish I would have.

Cherry called out to me after I took a few steps forward, "He loves you, Scarlett. Remember that."

At the time, I thought she was lying to me. Dallas didn't love anything. I knew that. Everybody knew that. I knew I was a damn fool for expecting anything more out of him. When I realized that I couldn't get myself to take another step forward. Tim was the one who ended up physically slinging me over his shoulder and carrying me into the house. When he finally set me down my head was spinning so bad I couldn't tell which was up. But when my eyes finally became still I looked ahead of me and found myself face to face with Dallas who looked exactly how I expected him too. Like he didn't want to see me.
