I almost broke my nose when I jumped off my bed and tripped down the stairs because someone was pounding on my door at 3 in the morning. I scrambled to my feet, struggling with the lock on the door in the darkness.
"What the hell?" I asked when I flung open the door to see Two-Bit and Ponyboy standing wide eyed.
I didn't even question what Ponyboy was doing back. I was more focused on their facial expressions. I knew something was wrong.
"Soda and Dal. They ran into the Tigers." Two-Bit choked out, "We need your car."
My blood ran cold and I nearly dropped dead right there. Two-Bit didn't need to spell it out that it had been from the Tiber Street Tiger gang. They were the real kind, the kind where if someone gets killed, nobody even questions it.
"Where are they?" I managed.
Two-Bit turned, "Out front. They're real bad."
I didn't wait for Two-Bit to finish talking before I was running through the wet grass. Darry was holding onto Soda, terror clear on his face. Soda was nearly unconscious and I could only guess it was from loss of blood. Even in the dark I could see the glimmer from the blood running down his face and soaking through his shirt.
"Get them in my car." I said but, I couldn't move. I was frozen.
"Scarlett?" Steve's voice shook me.
"I'm going."
Two-Bit shakes his head and rips the keys right out of my hand, "No way I'm lettin' you drive. Get in."
We all piled into the car and Two-Bit floored the gas pedal, tires squealing in protest. Soda was laying across Darry and his head was in my lap. Dallas was completely out, slumped against the side door with Ponyboy and surprisingly, Johnny, taking care of him. He was worse than Soda, much worse. It finally hit me then that they could die. I started feeling funny and I was breathing too fast. I couldn't handle it. I still can't.
"Hey Scar." Soda muttered, looking up at me.
I wiped the blood off his face and my tears dripped down onto his face, "Hey Soda."
"I went and got myself into trouble, didn't I?" He gave me a smile despite it all.
"Yeah, you did." I brushed my hands through his sandy brown hair that was stained in red.
The terror I felt in that moment was indescribable. Even though Soda and I had broken up I would have done anything for him. Just because you break up with someone doesn't mean you stop loving them.
"Sorry." He laughed, wincing when Two-Bit went flying over a speed bump.
"You don't have to act tough." I brushed my hand against his face.
"It's not an act." He laughed again but, his jaw was tight and his knuckles were white as they wrapped around Darry's t-shirt.
The car stopped suddenly but, I kept moving forward and smacked my head against the front seat.
"Damnit, Two-Bit!" Darry shouted, looking like he was hyperventilating himself.
"I got us here, didn't I?" Two-Bit shouted back, hopping out of the car and running into the hospital. In under a minute he came back with four paramedics.
"Damn kids." The one muttered as they moved Dallas onto the stretcher.
I couldn't bare to look at him mainly because, I knew he would hate everyone seeing him like that. He hated looking vulnerable and right then was the most vulnerable he had ever been.
