In the Castle

"Ayase!" My mom called from the dining hall.

It was just 8 o'clock in the morning. Like usual, I wasn't in the right state of mind. I mean, I lack sleep and the bed is calling for me! I always have to wake up early, and you know for what reason? Just to study lessons I don't even have any interest in!

"Ayase, if you don't wake up, there'll be no breakfast for you." My mom threatened me and I was on my feet in no time.

"Alright, I'm coming..." I sleepily muttered.

"P-Princess Ayase, good morning." The palace maids greeted me.

"Good morning." I replied.

I wonder what I ever did to them. They were always afraid of me... Is it because I have supernatural powers? Is it because I was just plain terrifying in their eyes?

"Good morning, mom and dad." I politely greeted when I reached the dining hall.

"How many times do we have to tell you? It's mother and father." My dad reminded me.

"Sorry, I guess it was out of habit." I said, since I have always called them mom and dad. I saw no need to change anything, but they always insisted.

"Do us a favor and eat quickly, or else your teacher would have to wait for a long time." My mom sternly told me as the butlers pulled a chair out for me.

I took my seat and the maids served me food. "Yes, yes..." I sighed then ate faster.

"Excuse us, my queen, but your child has woken up." The maids said, while politely bowing.

"Nao! Good morning!" My parents greeted my older twin brother as he entered the dining hall.

Unlike me, Nao has a limited supernatural powers, so the people in the palace likes him more. I've done nothing to harm my people though.

"Ayase, morning." Nao greeted me with a pat on the head.

"Morning, Nao." I said, then stood up to leave.

I don't know why I have always envied Nao so much... Is it because he's older than me? Is it because people like him more than me? Is it because I am so cold to people? I don't know...

Maybe because I know he's all I could never be.
