While Kaito and Kokichi were yelling at each other in the background, Shuichi's mind was a blur. He wasn't really listening to anyone; he just kept thinking...

She was in the files, it wasn't by chance... She was looking for something. How could he have been so blind? If only he noticed sooner. 

I am not a good detective... Kokichi's right... I don't deserve to be here.

Even though he didn't know Captain Kaede well, but she was kind and encouraging to him. She relied on him and trusted him, though he didn't deserve it. A surge of determination swept through his veins.

"I'll do it," he muttered to himself, "I'll uncover the truth and catch this culprit no matter what."

"Kaede!" Tsumugi was sobbing next to him, "what will we do now that you're gone?"

Shuichi sympathetically patted the grieving coworker on her back. At times like this, they need to stick together.

When Kaito got back to his own apartment that evening, he saw no lights were on at Kokichi's home next door. He kept an eye out the entire night, but nothing. 

What was going on? Kaito wondered. He decided that maybe he was thinking too much, but the next morning, he waited a long time, but Kokichi didn't come out to walk to work together. Where the hell was he at a time like this?

Everyone came to work without saying anything. A gloomy atmosphere descended upon the police station. Though Kaede's death was hard to them, with so many dangerous cases occurring, there was no time to grieve. Kokichi was at the office; his poker face was cold and emotionless and showed no sign of explaining where he had been last night.

Do you think you can avoid me forever? I'll get you to explain yourself. Kaito thought furiously.

Uhh... Wait a minute... Why was he so concerned with this rude brat's every move? It was almost like he's an anxious, clingy crush or something...

Kaito shook his head furiously.

"Eh, what are you shaking your head, dumbass? Did you finally sense the loose nails that fell into your brain?"

"I'M NOT STUPID!" he yelled. 

"Only stupid people who are insecure will yell, 'I'm not stupid~'"

Kaito rushed to grab Kokichi but Kokichi quickly crouched behind a desk. Kaito jumped onto the desk, slipping onto a loose piece of paper and falling onto his face.

"Hehe, Kaito, you're clumsy."

It was like the oppressive mood momentarily disappeared, and they were back to the times when Kokichi just made fun of everyone for kicks. Kaito glared at him. Kokichi stuck out his tongue.

"AHEM." A stern cough made everyone freeze and turn. A lady in police uniform with several badges of honor as well as ranking had entered the room. She had light purple hair, which is tied up with a black ribbon. She wore a pair of black gloves on her hand.

This was the Danganronpa Chief of Police, Kyoko Kirigiri.

"The investigation of Captain Kaede's death will commence under my direct supervision," the chief said, "You will all be expected to cooperate with me when it is necessary. District V3, you will be expected to keep working on your current cases."

"Who's going to be our new captain?" Miu Iruma asked tentatively.

"To be honest, we currently do not have a fit candidate to take over as captain," Kirigiri said, "Inspector Kokichi Ouma is the most experienced detective, so he will temporarily assume the role of captain."

"What???" Tenko exclaimed, "Him?"

"This is a disaster--" Himiko protested, but one look from the Kirigiri made her go silent.

When Kirigiri finally left, Kokichi coughed lightly to get everyone's attention. His dark violet eyes were glimmering, calculating.

"Do you know what need most in our precinct right now?"

The eyes of every police officer turned toward Kokichi. Was he actually going to give a motivational pep talk? Kaito nervously wondered what he would say.

"Distrust."

Shuichi facepalmed right then and there. A wave of groaning and indignation swept across the room.

"You really think you can be our leader? Captain Kaede would want us to work together," Himiko said.

"Kaede trusted, and that's why she's dead," Kokichi said, "Don't you realize? Why would the Chief Kirigiri not allow us to participate in the investigation? Why was she murdered at our HOME BASE? Why did NO ONE see them sneak in?"

Kaito felt goosebumps on his skin. His mind flashed back to nights ago when Kokichi pointed a gun to his head. A spy. But more than ever a flash of rage was boiling up again at the expression on Kokichi's face; he was wearing a wide Chesire grin, a villain's mask.

"Haha! Whoever did this knows this place like the back of their hand. Who knows, maybe even the Chief is in on it! Maybe I'm the murderer!"

Not actually a lie, thought Kokichi, I did kill her.

"ENOUGH!" Kaito said, breaking through Kokichi's thoughts. The shorty glared at Kaito like he had a death wish.

"What does the stupid one has to say?"

"We are a precinct! We are a team! During times like these, we must stick together!" Kaito said, "I have faith that nobody standing here is a murderer!"

Kaito was never the smartest person in the room. But he had three exceptional strengths. First was his physical strength. The second was his courage; the reason why he was quickly promoted. He had a powerful belief that everything he does will succeed, which the cleverest will never understand. The third was his uncanny ability to make people agree with him when he raised his voice loudly,

"Kaito is right," Shuichi said, "Even if we cannot be directly involved in Kaede's case, we must do everything we can to bring the murderer to justice."

Kokichi clucked his tongue. "Whatever it is you have, Kaito, it is a dangerous train of thought."

The two stood across from each other, shoulders squared, one giant and dwarf cops staring each other down.

Sorry if this is slow. By slow I mean I didn't update for like months.  School put me in hiatus, but now under house arrest I have some time to work on this. Thinking up interesting plot  for crime cases is hard... I'll take my best stab at it.
