When you catch a cold, hug a teddy bear

"ACHOO!" Kaito sneezed with the volume of an earthquake.

"...are you sure you didn't catch a cold during the stakeout?" Kokichi said sarcastically, "I told you to wear a thicker jacket, idiot."

Kaito glared at Kokichi, unwilling to admit he was right. His I-told-you-so smirk was way too infuriating. Even more annoying was his nonchalant way of brushing off the moment of intimacy they shared last night.

"Will you be alright?" Shuichi said worriedly, "That sounded pretty serious."

"I'll be fine-"

"Take the day off and rest for the weekend," Kokichi said, "I don't want the cold spreading to the rest of the detectives."

"Don't be ridiculous. We are busy as hell right now. I can't miss work because of a few sniffles," Kaito growled.

"Nothing good will come from sending a sick person into action," Kokichi said coldly, "The rest of the team is just as capable. I'll handle all the cases you were working on."

"You're insane-"

"I'm a lieutenant. This is an order."

Kaito stumbled home to his single-bedroom apartment. Because he had just moved into the city, he had no time to decorate it. It was empty and cold. There was nothing for him to do so he just slipped into bed and stared at the ceiling.

It was embarrassing that while everyone was working hard due to Kaede's passing that he was staying home on sick leave. What was Kokichi thinking? He wanted to yell at him for being irresponsible, but he found that he couldn't. Out all of them, the new lieutenant was the busiest of them all. Not only he was virtually taking on all of Kaede's responsibilities, but he was also always rushing out of the police station mumbling to himself the whole time and then staying at the police station until even the janitor had gone home.

After Korekiyo was arrested, Kokichi and Kaito haven't talked to each other. When Kokichi assigned cases for him and Shuichi to work on, he only spoke to Shuichi and let him convey the information to Kaito. He was obviously still mad at him. Whenever Kaito tried to talk to him, he would lie, make an excuse, and disappear in plain sight. The sly detective was a master at avoiding conversations.

Though he didn't want to admit it, all of his sneezings had made him a little hazy. Just sleep, he told himself, you'll get better if you just rest. He fell into a delirious sleep.

...

Around 5:30, Kaito's doorbell rang.

"Who is it?" He mumbled as he made it to his door. He opened it to find no one there, but a plastic bag hanging on the doorknob with a note:

These are some cold medicine, pain reliever, and other medicines a person should keep stock of in their houses. Don't be a dumbass about your health. Make sure you read the labels and take the right pills like a human with brains.

"That bastard!" Kaito said, crumpling the paper and shoving it in his pocket. There was no name on the note, but Kaito knew only one person would write something like this. How in the world did the liar know that he didn't keep any medicine at home? Kokichi always acted like he didn't care, but then he would do the most unpredictable things.

Even though he was mad, after taking the medicine he bought for him, Kaito slept very soundly that night.

...

The next morning, Kaito was woken up by another ring of the doorbell.

"It's too early to go to work!" Kaito yelled as he opened the door. He expected to see Kokichi, but instead, there was no one there and the faint sounds of fleeing footsteps down the hall.

On his doorstep was a small teddy bear. It was a unique one with half its face black and the other half white with a wicked grin. It was just the kind of thing Kokichi would try to scare him with, he thought angrily. He must be still teasing for being scared in the haunted house.

But... the thought that Kokichi would wake up early to give him this after already sending a care package the day before... was...

Kaito hugged the teddy bear in his arms. It smelled odd, with a slight whiff of what he thought was girly perfume.

His cold felt all cured now.
