Kaito slowly turned around with his hands up. The short, dark-haired boy was glaring at him with a face of utter disgust and hatred. Kaito wouldn't ever admit it, but Kokichi's vengeful expression scared the hell out him; it was like staring at a ghost.

"I should have known better. You really had me fooled."

"Huh?" Kaito replied unintelligently.

"Joining the precinct at this timing... even moving into an apartment next to mine to monitor me... and for me to think you were actually that naive. I can almost laugh at myself!"

"Wait, hold on-"

"SHUT UP!" Kokichi said, his voice hoarse, "I'm the one doing the questioning now. How did you know I was secretly looking for the mole from Team Danganronpa?"

"What's a mole?"

"Stop pretending to be an idiot! I hate lies!"

"I am only here to check on you for the captain!"

"Using Kaede for protection won't help you!" Kokichi leveled the gun in his hand at Kaito's head, "I'll eliminate the spy in the police force at all costs!"

Wait, spy? Kaito's blood ran cold. Is that what Kokichi thought he was? So was this what all his distrust was about?

"Kokichi, I'm not a spy."

"Like hell do I believe that! You just broke into my apartment!"

"Stop threatening me with a gun to my head. You're a police officer."

"I have no qualms about drawing a weapon against a gang spy."

"Stop making accusations without proof!"

"You're right," Kokichi said, "I don't have solid evidence yet, but I can still get you arrested for breaking into my room. I hope you enjoy going to prison for attempted burglary."

Kokichi could barely hear the words coming out of his own mouth. He lied so much, sometimes he felt like he was detached from his own body. He didn't even know what his face looked like right now, but he knew that his insides felt like they were tearing apart. He felt anger and hate at Kaito... and himself.

He was supposed to be the liar, the deceitful one. The detective that trusts no one and suspects everyone, including himself. Doubt and mistrust defined him. It was what made him Kokichi Ouma. It was what made him a cutthroat detective.

Then why? When slapped in the face with suspicious actions from Kaito, something inside his chest was screaming. It was a completely illogical feeling, and Kokichi was summoning all the will within him to suppress it... a voice that shrieked loud and clear... it can't be Kaito.

"LISTEN TO ME, DAMMIT!" Kaito bellowed, breaking into Kokichi's thoughts.

Kaito started walking towards him. Kokichi panicked. "Stand back! I'll shoot you!" At that moment, his hands suddenly froze on the trigger.

Kaito saw Kokichi hesitate and seized the moment immediately, grabbing Kokichi's wrist, forcing him to drop the gun. Kokichi, instantly fearing for his life, aimed a punch at Kaito. But the taller detective was stronger and caught the punch in midair.

"LET GO OF ME!" Kokichi shrieked.

"I'LL LET GO WHEN YOU F***ING CALM DOWN!"

The two struggled for a good minute. Kokichi thrashed like crazy... grabbing him was like trying to hold a slippery eel, it an eel had legs and constantly tried to kick you in your private parts. Frustrated, Kaito finally pinned Kokichi on a wall.

"Kokichi, I swear I'm not a spy. If I was a spy, I would kill you, right? I just want to talk."

"Likely story! Why should I trust you?"

"If you trust no one, how do you have faith in anything? You're naive..."

Naive? That statement was enough to stun Kokichi and make him stop struggling. Shrewd, cunning, sly... those words were all used to describe him often by others. But now this idiot was calling him naive? It was almost sort of funny.

"K-Kokichi?" Kaito was asking concernedly. Kokichi couldn't reply because he was too busy laughing... wait, laughing? Kokichi laughed even harder at the realization. For the first time in ages, he was laughing not as a disguise or lie but a true laugh, and it was at a ridiculous time like this.

"Alright, I'll listen," Kokichi said, "So, can you release me now? Unless you enjoy being in this position~"

Kaito realized that he was still pressing Kokichi against the wall. He let go of the boy faster than lightning, looking away. Wait, was Kaito blushing?

"You're not off the hook yet!" Kaito said, trying to regain his composure, "Start talking!"

"Okay~ From this point onward, everything I tell you is going to be the truth," Kokichi said, knowing very well he was going to mix in some lies.

"Go on."

"I see you have been reading my parent's case file. So you already know that their murder is unsolved. I'm reinvestigating it."

"You're hiding something! What was all that talk about me being a spy for?"

"That was a lie~"

"What? A lie?"

"Because the case was unresolved, I suspected that maybe a police investigator ignored some on purpose. I was only doubting everyone to avoid any mistakes."

"Yeah, your paranoia is pointless! There's no way there could be a traitor among the police!"

Oh, Kaito. If only if he knew the truth. At times like these, Kokichi believed it was better to lie. "Now that you know my motive, will you leave me alone?"

"No. I'm going to investigate with you."

Kokichi rolled his eyes. He thought the idiot might say that... An idea rolled into his mind. He turned around from Kaito to hide his huge grin as a cracked the perfect plan to get Kaito off his case...

This was going to get fun... and a little spooky.
