They always tell you about black ice. Everyone gives tips and tricks to avoid it and how to stay safe if you hit ice and start to slide. Every driver who lives somewhere it gets cold should know how to drive on ice.
No one mentions what to do when you start to spin out and there was no ice or water.
I was sure of it. There hadn't been a drop of rain or snow in over a week. It was day three of being 45 degrees, and we were all loving the warm weather.
Now, I know what you are thinking. How the hellish less than 50 degrees. considered warm? Well, when you live in Colorado, 45 is thrilling. I get so sick of snow come January, but there is usually still a bit of snow on the ground. However, lately we have been blessed with warmth and I was already dreaming of days by the pool.
Since it was much too cold for the pool, my two best friends and I decided to just go for lunch instead. Dave and Busters had recently opened, and we were dying to check it out.
I had the day off from my receptionist job at a local dentists office, and Macie didn't work weekends. Jordan technically didn't have the day off... but he called out. Perks of working for your older brothers mechanics shop. If Jordan knew they didn't have much to do, he could get away with taking a personal day.
I was driving Jordan's old Honda Civic, with the radio up and the windows cracked. The peeling, dark green paint reflected the sun directly into my eyes, so I had my Aviator sunglasses on.
Not a cloud or snow flake in sight at 1:30pm on that beautiful Saturday afternoon. As we all laughed and belted out some Panic! at the Disco, reliving our angsty teenage days, I couldn't help feeling like my life was amazing.
But... then it wasn't.
As I came out of a long turn, I felt the wheels catch. Suddenly the back end of the car swung left, right out from under us. My eyes went wide and I snapped my head over to look at Macie. We made to contact for one brutally long second, before her big blue eyes looked over my shoulder and screamed.
The back end was still swinging around. Jordan was screaming instructions to me, but nothing was working. Breaking, accelerating, turning the wheel, turning the other way. Nothing worked. We just kept sliding until I felt us starting to tilt upwards.
Like a horrifying roller coaster, the front of the car went up at an angle, as the back end began to slide off the side of the road. My friends screams echoed in my head as the car tipped straight up.
The last thing I saw was the silhouette of the treetops against the sun through the windshield... and then we flipped over.
