“How dare you!” I said as I stomped angrily following Ryota outside my grandma’s house. “How dare me?” He asked confusingly as he turned around to face me. “Yeah, how dare YOU! You knew all along who I was and you didn’t even bother to tell me. What’s that about?” I shouted in pure irritation. “Yeah, I know. But I think it’s meaningless if you don’t find out for yourself,” he answered in all seriousness. My anger suddenly started fading away after hearing that for you know what, he was right. It would have been meaningless if he just came up to me and said, “Hi, I’m Ryu. We used to be best friends until your father ruined my father’s business.”
Yeah, my father did that. It was supposed to be a done deal. They will put the Kanada’s tea shop in all of the branch of my dad’s hotel but for a split second, my dad pulled away with the deal. The Kanada’s business was dying then, that partnership was supposed to save it but for some reason that I still can’t understand, it didn’t happen as expected.
“Sorry,” I said in almost a whisper but I guess he was able to hear it clearly as he asked, “What are you sorry for?”
Actually, I’m not sure myself what I should be sorry for so I thought I’d start with the obvious by saying, “Sorry my dad ruined your dad’s business.”
He let out a soft chuckle and said, “That’s not your fault.”
“Then, sorry,” I said again.
“For what this time?” He asked as if irately.
“For not being able to do something about our friendship back then and for forgetting who you are,” I said in all honestly. He sighed aloud and a soft grin on his face showed when he said, “That’s not entirely your fault either. I didn’t do anything to save in either.”
“Then what are you mad about?” I can’t help but ask a little bit annoyed now.
“Who said I’m mad at anything?” He said raising his voice a little as well.
“Then why do you keep acting like you do. Like on the first day, I swear Ryu, you act like you have a problem with me. And that stare you’re giving me, seriously, it’s really giving me the creeps,” I said admitting it frankly.
He got quiet for a little while until I heard him sigh again and said, “Sorry.”
I can’t help but laugh upon hearing that from him and answer, “Why are you saying sorry too?”
“Cause I didn’t know how to react when I first saw you so I acted that way,” he replied shyly. He looked like he really meant what he said and that he even regretted what he did that I don’t even know how to respond to it.
“So…friends?” I said embarrassingly after awhile, rocking back and forth at the ball of my foot. He looked at me with a shock on his face but it immediately brightened after awhile as he came to me and hugged me really tightly saying, “Friends! I miss you, you big dope.” It was as if nothing happened. I put my arms around him as well and messed up his hair playfully saying, “I missed you too you big baby.”
“Ahem,” we heard someone letting out a fake cough and we both let go of each other in unison.
“Oh Matsuru, it’s just you,” I said with a giggle as I saw him standing there looking at us in pure confusion.
“Your grandma was worried so he sent me hear to check up how you guys are going but I guess you don’t need anything huh?” He answered as he stared back and forth to me and Ryota. Neither I nor Ryota has an answer for his question that for a moment, we stood there in awkward silence.
“A—anyways, since you’re here anyways. I want to tell you both something. I’ve been thinking of it since earlier,” I said hoping to break the silence.
“What is it?” The both of them said at the same time.
“It’s about grandma. I’m scared that the people who are coming after us will come here and my grandma will be put into danger. I don’t want that now that I knew my grandma is alive. I’ll die if that will ever happen,” I said, almost breaking down into tears as I imagined the possibility of it all.
“That’s understandable,” Matsuru said putting some thought of what I said.
“Then what do you have in mind?” Ryota asked straightforwardly.
“By nightfall, we’ll tell grandma we want to tour around town but instead, let’s make a run for it,” I answered. I already have the plan stuck to my head so it’s not hard to convince them anymore.
“Where do you suggest we’ll go?” Matsuru asked curiously.
“About twenty minutes from here, there’s a secluded resort owned by our family. I might get find out by my parents but for now, that’s the safest place we could stay in. I trust everyone there,” I said directly.
Both Matsuru and Ryota looked at each other for awhile as if communicating with one another and then to me. They nodded simultaneously and with that, the deal is sealed.
