Chapter 24: A Love United
~Grant~
"I hate this stupid tradition," I said as Hennessy helped with the tie around my neck since my hands were apparently shaking too much even though I wasn't nervous. At least I didn't think I was. I was just about to marry the love of my life and nothing was going to go wrong, right?
Hennessy snorted. "It was your and Ollie's idea to spend the night separately and not even see each other until the wedding. You didn't have to."
"Yeah, well, I thought it would be all cute and magical to not see each other until we're about to get married," I said. "But now I miss him too much. It was hard not sleeping beside him last night. I was so close to just breaking down his hotel door because I couldn't handle it."
"You only have a few more minutes left," Hennessy said. "You'll be fine."
Hennessy finished tying me tie so I turned to look at the full length mirror. Even though I was ready to go and I was happy with how I looked, something felt off. It took me some time to realize exactly what was wrong. It had nothing to do with how I looked.
It was the fact that neither of the people that raised me wouldn't be at my wedding. My dad wouldn't. Cora wouldn't. Sure, my birth mom was coming and I was really grateful she was but it wasn't the same as having the people who raised me.
Hennessy was able to tell exactly what I was feeling a bit upset about because she gently rested her hand on my shoulder and said, "Dad would be really happy for you right now. I know he would."
"I tried not thinking about it," I said. "He's never going to be able to watch any of us get married or have kids. He wasn't even able to see us graduate."
"I know," Hennessy said softly. "It's hard. I wish he could be here to see you get married to Ollie."
"Yeah, me too," I said.
I was feeling a lot worse now and I was going to have to find something to raise my mood before I went out there to get married but I didn't even have to find something. It just came to me.
I suddenly heard someone say, "Grant!" and I turned to look just in time to see Wilbur and Rusty rush over to me.
I smiled as I bent down to give my little brothers a hug, feeling very shocked to see them. "What are you two doing here?" I asked.
"Uh, to see you get married," Wilbur said. "Duh."
"Okay, but how did you get here?" I asked.
"From a very long car ride," Wilbur said. "And I mean very long. It didn't help that Mom got me a slurpee on the way and it felt like I had to pee every hour. We almost didn't make it. But we did leave yesterday. We just stopped off at a motel."
"Wait, hold on," I said, processing what Wilbur just said. "Mom's here?"
He nodded and that was when I noticed Cora standing in the doorway.
I stood up straight and looked at her. "Let me guess. You're here to try to stop me from getting married?"
"No, I'm not," Cora said. "I'm here because I want to watch you get married."
She was lying. She couldn't be here to watch me marry Ollie, a guy, when she made it so clear about how much she didn't want me to end up to a guy. And there was nothing that could have change her mind so suddenly. I stopped talking to her. Hennessy stopped trying to convince her to stop treating me poorly.
