Chapter 53: Who to Trust?

~Ollie~

I didn't even hear the front door open as I was trying to piece together all of these clues I had that was going to lead me to figuring out where Hugh was hiding and who he was going to target next. So I was a bit startled when I suddenly heard Grant say, "I brought you some food. Can you take a break to eat?"

I looked over at him, eyeing the takeout bag suspiciously. "Where did you get the food from?"

"From the diner," Grant said. "I even got you a banana milkshake because I know it's your favourite and you haven't had one in a long time."

I was about to walk over to Grant to get the food but I stopped when I heard the voice say Don't. It could be poisoned. You don't know who's on Hugh's side.

"It's okay," I told the voice. "They're family."

"Who are you talking to?" Grant asked.

Don't tell him. It's the only way to keep him safe.

"No one," I said, walking over to him. "Thanks for the food."

"No problem," Grant said. "I did forget to get dessert though, so want to go out afterwards to get dessert?"

"I can't," I said. "It's not safe to go out yet when I don't know where Hugh is. He could be walking around the village right now, for all I know. It's not even safe for you to go out since it's highly possible you're his next target."

"It's okay, I'm being safe," Grant said. "And I didn't see him at all when I went to the diner. So do you want to get dessert after? You've been cooped up in the house for the past couple days."

"Because it's safer in here," I said. "Hugh doesn't know where I live. At least not yet... It probably won't be long until he does find out. Wait... What did you have in mind for dessert?"

       "Frozen yogurt," Grant said.

Frozen yogurt was one of my favourite desserts and I really did want to get some after Grant and I finished eating. I was even about to agree to going to get frozen yogurt but I couldn't after I heard the voice say, You can't leave. It's too dangerous.

"I can't," I told Grant. "I have to stay here."

"Okay, if it's what you want," Grant said. "I can always go out afterwards to get you some frozen yogurt."

       I smiled. "Okay."

Grant and I sat down at the table in the kitchen so we could eat the food that Grant brought from the diner, which was my favourite burger plus some onion rings.

While we were eating, Grant was silent for a bit before saying, "If I tell you something, can you promise you won't be mad at me?"

"Yeah, of course," I said. "You know I'll never get mad at you. You know, unless you tell me that the piano sucks and that it is the worst instrument out there when recorders suck. But I'm only saying that because when I was in grade four, we had to learn how to play it and let me just tell you that fourth graders aren't the best recorder players."

Grant chuckled. "Yeah, I know, I had to do it as well. That was a torturous music unit. Anyway, that wasn't what I was going to say. What I want to say is... that I'm worried about you, Ollie."

I furrowed my eyebrows. "What? Why? I'm totally fine."

"Okay, but... You haven't left the house for a couple of days and it's not good to stay inside," Grant said.
