Chapter 45: Plan A Being Set
~Ollie~
"Grant, I'm telling you, this isn't going to work," I said. "He's my dad. I know him. And I know it won't work."
"Come on, Ollie," Grant said. "It's a very romantic dinner for your parents. I don't get how it won't work. It worked for Ernest and Hennessy."
"Yeah, but with them we only had to focus on getting Hennessy in the same room as Ernest," I pointed out. "Ernest was the one who was trying to make things right so we didn't have to worry about getting him there. With my parents, we have to get both of them there and considering they're being very stubborn about their feelings, they'll leave as soon as they realize we're setting them up."
Grant sighed heavily as he leaned back into the couch. "Why is this so complicated? Why do they have to keep dancing around their feelings? Why does anyone ever dance around their feelings? If two people clearly like each other, why don't they be honest and tell each other right away? You know, like we did."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Grant, we did not tell each other right away. You definitely didn't considering you tell me all the time that you starting liking me when I pushed you up against the locker, like the weirdo you are. If we did, you would have told me then and not a month and a half later."
"Well, I would have told you a whole lot earlier if you just got all the hints I was giving you," Grant said. "But no, you just had to be Oblivious Ollie."
"And clearly, my parents aren't going to drop hints or anything," I said. "Or if they do, they're not going to get the hints. We need to do something else that will get them together. Or at least get them to go on a date or... something."
"Ollie, if we could have gotten them to go on a date, then we wouldn't be sitting here right now trying to figure out how to get them together," Grant said.
"I mean on a date that they don't know is a date," I said. "If that makes sense."
"So you want to go on the surprise element route?" Grant asked. "I like it."
"It doesn't have to be a surprise," I said. "We just have to get them to go on a date without them realizing it's a date. And I have no idea how to do that."
"Ooh, I got an idea," Grant said. "Two words. Double date. You say you want to have dinner as a family, me included, and boom. Double date. They just won't know it's a double date."
"Yeah, that's not going to work," I said. "We have dinner together all the time, just the four of us. It won't change if we have another dinner together."
"Fair point," Grant said. "Can you and I go on a date then?"
"Grant, focus."
"Right, I'm focused. But, and this is just hypothetical, say your parents are still stubborn and oblivious after our amazing, yet failed, attempts to get them back together. Can we go on a date then?"
"Grant, we're married. We can go on a date whenever we want. Right now, we need to figure out how to get my parents back together because their obliviousness is killing me here."
"Now we know where you got your obliviousness from."
"Yes, I get it, Grant. I was oblivious. You don't have to keep bring it up."
"Hey, Ollie, you were oblivious."
I sighed. Why was it so hard for Grant to take things seriously for even five minutes? All I wanted to do was figure out how Grant and I could get my parents together since they were being too stubborn but all Grant talked about was either me and him going on a date or banging.
