Chapter 51: On Edge
~Ollie~
"I'm telling you, I know what I saw," I said. "He was in the maze of mirrors. Why isn't anyone believing me?"
"It's not that we're not believing you," Horatio said. "There hasn't been any news about Hugh escaping prison and when someone escapes, police stations are informed about it. And someone would have noticed him."
"Look, Ollie," Shaw said. "Are you sure it was him? It could have been someone else that looked like him?"
I couldn't believe it. Nobody, not even Shaw, was believing that I actually saw Hugh in the maze of mirrors. I knew what I saw. I didn't imagine it.
"Are you kidding me?" I asked. "You too? You think that I... I just didn't actually saw him? I know what I saw. I turned a corner in the maze and nearly bumped into him. He just... smirked at me. Someone who looked like him wouldn't just smirk at me. Does no one believe me?"
"I believe you," Grant said. "Of course I do." He looked at Shaw and Horatio. "You should have seen how terrified he looked in the maze when I found him."
"I just don't get why the police weren't informed about it," Horatio said. "And why nobody else has seen him?"
"Dude, it's Halloween," Grant said. "There's people wearing masks everywhere. He's probably wearing a mask and took it off when he was in the maze."
"And the prison isn't too far away from Spruceworth," Shaw said. "This is Hugh we're talking about. I wouldn't put it past him to escape prison long before someone notices."
"Oh, now you believe me?" I asked. "Where was that energy when you were thinking that I only saw someone who looked like Hugh?"
Shaw sighed. "I'm sorry. I just don't want to think about what would happen if Hugh really did escape. I hate to admit it but... He's really good at getting away with things. Chances are, it's going to take him a long time to get caught."
"S-seriously?" I asked. I really didn't want to relive the worry and pain I felt after the explosion and having Hugh go a long time without getting caught. I didn't want to worry every second of every day, wondering if he was going to strike again.
"Really?" Grant asked Shaw, not looking too impressed. "You had to say that? You couldn't have assured him that Hugh will be caught soon?"
"I didn't want to give him false hope," Shaw said.
"Except right now, false hope is probably better than no hope," Grant said.
As Grant and Shaw continued to argue about whether or not they should have given me hope or not, I started looking around, a weird feeling suddenly washing over me. I couldn't explain the feeling. It was almost as if something ominous was happening.
That was when I saw why.
Hugh walked out of the maze of mirrors just then, looking around before his eyes landed on me. Like what happened in the maze, Hugh smirked at me, sending a shiver down my spine.
A skull mask was rested on top of his head so he pulled it down, putting it on his face before walking off.
And I was too terrified to say anything right away. It was only when he was completely out of sight that I spoke up. "I-I just saw him again."
"What?" Horatio asked. "Where?"
"H-he walked out of the maze," I said. "A-and he... He put on a mask. A skull mask."
