Mother's Day

Klaus didn't know what was wrong.

She's been acting weird all day, plastering a fake smile to her face whenever anyone talks to her. He can tell when she's faking it, only because he knows what her true happiness actually looks like. This isn't it.

"You okay?" Klaus first asks at dinner, whispering it to her, careful to not embarrass her in front of the rest of his family.

"Hm? I'm good," she smiles, pressing a small kiss to his cheek to confirm her statement.

He nods, leaving the situation be until further into the night where he notices her once again, a frown plastered onto her lips. He despises being unable to tell what's wrong, but he knows she's stubborn and most likely will refuse to even admit anything is up in the first place.

It isn't until they're in his car, driving back to their home when he mentions it again.

"Love?"

"Yeah?" Her voice is tired for it being only nine at night.

"Did I do something?"

She looks at him as if he's insane. "No, Klaus. Of course not. Don't be dumb."

"Then what's wrong? And don't try to tell me it's nothing, cause I know that's not true," Klaus states, his tone serious as he flickers his eyes to the road and then to her quickly.

She sighs, "It's nothing, Klaus. Just leave it alone."

He can tell she's frustrated. Hell, he is too. What's so important where she can't tell him what's going on?

"Caroline-"

"Klaus, please."

Klaus lets out a heavy exhale, unable to resist. He nods, turning the radio on softly to fill the silence which now fills the car. When the two arrive home, Klaus carefully studies how Caroline enters the house, silent. She places her bag down on the table, taking a deep sigh before running a hand through her tangled blonde hair.

"I'm going to ask this one more time. Are. You. Okay."

She closes her eyes, turning away, before letting out small sobs. Unable to face him, she quickly begins to walk upstairs into their shared bedroom, kicking off her shoes and heading into the bathroom to take a shower to wash the day away.

Klaus is stunned, coming back into reality as he follows after her, racing up the stairs to be by her side.

"Caroline, tell me what's wrong. Please, my love," he begs, wanting nothing more than to take away all of her pain. When she doesn't answer, he wipes the tears from her face, cupping her face in his rather large hands before placing a long, lingering kiss onto her lips as if to tell her it's all going to be okay.

"I love you," she whispers.

He smiles slightly, kissing her forehead. "I love you more."

She shakes her head. "I'm sorry for ignoring you all day."

"It's okay. I just want to know why."

Caroline takes in a deep inhale before starting. "Do you know what tomorrow is?"

Klaus ponders his mind, coming up with nothing. "No, what?"

She sighs, "It's Mother's Day."

Then it all hits him. The tears. The silence. The fake smiles.

"I'm so sorry. I can't believe I forgot," Klaus shakes his head, now blaming himself.

"It's okay, Klaus. I just... I miss her, is all. I miss her more than you can even imagine. Sometimes the pain is unbearable and I just can't deal with it, you know? Like, I just want to have a normal life for a day. A day without having to worry about which flowers to buy for my mother's grave or what I'm going to talk about with her as if she can actually hear me," Caroline pauses, crying now, "Sometimes it's just easier to fake it."

Klaus pulls her in closer to him, as if possible, before kissing her lips once again, comforting her shaking body and unsteady heartbeat.

"She can hear you, love. And I'm almost positive she's looking down on you with a smile, so, so proud of you. Now, how about you wipe your tears, take a shower, and we can get to bed, huh? I'm sure Liz doesn't want to see her daughter crying all night now, would she?" Klaus smiles, the action somehow contagious as Caroline returns the small grin.

She hastily rubs at her eyes, wiping away the tears before stripping of her clothes. The water is nice, soothing even. She spends a few too many minutes lathering her hair, cleaning and shaving her body before stepping out, pulling on a white robe. Klaus is already in his pajamas when she comes out of the bathroom, slipping into a pair of underwear and one of Klaus's T-shirts which falls comfortably to her mid-thigh.

"Hey Klaus?"

"Hm?" He looks over to her from his bed, his eyes full of love.

She smiles, "I love you."

"I love you too, Caroline. We can stop in the morning to grab some flowers for your mom, okay?" He presses a small kiss to her temple as she climbs into bed beside him, letting out a small yawn as she does so.

"Could we get some yellow roses? It's just that those were her favorite," she shrugs as if it's stupid to even ask.

Klaus takes her chin in his hand, pressing a small kiss to her lips. "Anything you want."
