Carolines eyes opened at the sudden jolt in the mattress. Her heart beat a little bit faster as she looked over at Klaus.
He was sweating, shaking remarkably. It was a bit unusual for Klaus to get nightmares while someone else was around him. Usually he put on a mask which showed bravery and fearlessness- but in front of her he couldn't hide it. She was the only one who seemed to understand his true fears.
Her heart ached at the sight, placing a hand hesitantly on his back, rubbing small soothing circles. She hated seeing him in pain, even if it was just a nightmare. Half the stuff that occurred in his life he kept to himself, he wasn't very good at communication and Caroline knew that. She never pushed him to spill his past life involving his father or being abused physically and emotionally. It was a touchy subject.
"Klaus, hey. Shh. You're okay, you're okay." He twitches, trying to push her away. Luckily in a sleep state he wasn't strong enough to physically harm the girl.
"No, no please. Don't hurt her. Don't hurt her!" She furrowed her eyebrows, confused and a bit intrigued about his dream. She felt a pain in her chest at the small whimper he let out.
"Klaus! Wake up! Hey, it's me. It's me. You're okay. No one can hurt you." Klaus jolted awake, startling the both of them. Although Caroline doesn't break contact, continuously rubbing her hand on his back and planting small kisses on his overly heated forehead and lips.
"It was just a nightmare. You're okay." Klaus certainly was used to having nightmares. He had them all the time when he was younger. They started fading when he got together with Caroline, but that doesn't mean they never happened. Tonight was one of those unfortunate nights they did.
"Did I wake you love?" Caroline was almost annoyed at Klaus's stubbornness to talk about his feelings. Why was he so worried if he woke her up instead of the fact he was probably terrified just a few seconds ago.
"Stop worrying about me. I'm scared for you, Klaus. You never talk about your nightmares. They seem to bother you and don't even say they don't because I know better." He opened up his mouth before closing it, not wanting to look the girl in the eyes as he sat up.
He needed to take a shower or something... He was sweaty and it was insanely humid in this room despite the air conditioner blowing constantly.
"I'm fine Caroline. It was just some stupid nightmare. Everyone gets them." He attempted to get her off his case but she doesn't budge, placing her hands on her hips.
"Does everyone gets them every single night like you do?" He can't argue that.
He swiftly gets off the bed, taking his shirt and pants off leaving him in just his boxers. Caroline tries not to focus on the large tattoos lining his back and upper arms. She found them insanely hot, and quite a turn-on which Klaus liked to tease her about often.
"Where are you going?" The blonde quickly follows him.
"I need to shower." She stops Klaus, putting a hand on his chest and standing in front of him. If Klaus really wanted to, he could probably lift her by the arms, put her to the side of him with no effort and carry on, but he didn't.
"What did you dream about? Come on, talk to me. Please?" She gave him the puppy dog eyes, her bottom lip pouting and eyes fluttering. He rolled his eyes, almost letting a grin crack. How did he get such an adorable girlfriend?
"It was about my father, okay?"
"I kind of guessed, but what'd he do? You never talk about him."
"There's a reason for that. I dreamed you and I were at dinner. It was beautiful out so we went to see the sunset. It was so realistic, like it actually happened. The sky was all types of colors and you were laughing, your hair in the wind- I just wanted to draw it almost." Caroline smiles a bit. It was nice to know Klaus dreamed about her.
"That doesn't sound like a nightmare to me." He continued with his story.
"Suddenly, it was so quick- my father appeared. I couldn't move, I was frozen almost. He took you by the arm, and I couldn't help you. He... He took your shirt off and... I just stared and watched like a coward. I just stood there." Caroline frowned, pulling her boyfriend into a hug.
"He's dead, Klaus. He can't hurt me. He can't touch me. No one can so long as your by me. You protect me, and I love you for that, okay?" She cups his face as if he were a child, planting a peck on the forehead. Klaus nodded.
"You won't ever... Leave me, will you?" The question threw Caroline off guard. She let him go, giving him a look as if he were insane.
"Klaus, I couldn't leave you even if I tried. You're always with me, even when you aren't physically. You're in my mind, my heart- everywhere. And I love you." Klaus felt like breaking down, falling on his knees and just holding onto the love of his life and never letting her go.
"I love you too."
