Caroline sat in her house, her lips unusually used to the taste of alcohol as she took another swig of the drink. Her throat burned, but her heart was aching in pain, and her mind begged her to continue drinking the liquid.
Tears stained her eyes and cheeks, and she felt more coming. Sniffles escaped her nose, and she felt as if her world were falling apart.
Her mother was gone.
The woman who has raised her since birth, been there for her all her life, kisses her head before she fell asleep- was never going to be able to talk to her again. She wouldn't get to see her little girl get married and have kids, and become a grandmother. She had died.
The sudden knock on the door startled Caroline, and her attention turned towards the sound. With a groan, she stood up and wobbled over to the door, still holding the bottle of alcohol in her left hand. She opened the door, frowning when seeing the familiar man standing in front of her.
"What, Klaus?" she asked him, annoyed he had visited her without warning. Especially on the day of her mother's death. His eyes flickered down to the bottle, and back up to her as she attempted not to fall over. She just wanted to get hammered and fall asleep in peace. Couldn't he give her just that?
"I heard what happened with your mother. Caroline, I am so sorry," Klaus shook his head, and pulled the girl into a hug. She was too weak to attempt to squirm out of his grip, so she just stood, taking the hug.
The smell of his cologne lingered on his shirt as she found comfort in the familiar scent. His strong arms felt nice around her, and she leaned into his embrace, needing some sort of contact with someone after a day like today.
"Klaus, I-"
"Shh. It's okay. I'm going to stay with you tonight, okay? I want to make sure you're alright. I'll sleep on the couch if you want," he offered. She shook her head, releasing him.
"I'm fine, Klaus," she rolled her eyes, taking another swig of her drink. He narrowed his eyes, the lie clearly unbelievable.
"Caroline, you've been drinking. You're clearly unstable to be by yourself, and I could never leave you after seeing you like this. Not on a day when you've lost someone-"
"Please... just, don't..." she pleaded, tears rolling down her eyes at even the thought of her mother. He stepped inside the house, already once invited in. Closing the door behind him, he took the bottle from her hands, guiding her over to the couch and sitting her down as he put the alcohol away.
"You need some sleep, love. It's been a hard day," he frowned, helping her to her room. A part of Caroline was annoyed he was here, but a part was thankful he cared enough to visit, and refused to leave her like this. It made her heart swell with a mix of emotions, all extremely confusing to her because of the state she was in.
Without realization, she stripped from her jeans and shirt, leaving her in her matching pink lace underwear and bra. Klaus had looked away, not wanting to make the girl feel uncomfortable. She picked out a T-shirt, not bothering to put on pants.
"I'm so tired Klaus," she told him.
"Let's get you to bed then, okay?" he asked. She shook her head.
"No, I mean I'm tired of feeling like this. I feel empty- Klaus, my mother is gone," she suddenly sobbed. He sighed, pulling her into his arms.
"I know, love. I know. But you know what? It will get better. Trust me. You will get passed this, and you will smile again," he kissed the top of her head, feeling her weight suddenly falling. She had clearly had one too many drinks as she fell towards the ground. Klaus easily caught her with his fast reflexes as he pulled her back up, scooping her into his arms swiftly.
He laid her on the bed, sitting down next to her and placing a blanket over her body.
"I'll see you in the morning, Caroline. You will never be alone. I won't allow you to be," he whispered to the girl, getting up, about to head into the living room before he heard a small voice.
"Don't leave..." she whispered. He turned around, nodding and laying back down behind her. He pulled her into his arms, holding her gently.
"I'll never leave you, Caroline. Always remember that," he whispered, and the two fell asleep in each other's arms.
