Chapter 5

The call only lasts a few moments, but I had heard every word that was spoken by Jane and the man on the other end. Jane is reporting on my progress and being instructed to stay in touch with me even after I am released from the clinic. The man on the other end wants to make sure that the machines have shut down like they are supposed to, because there is some concern that they will continue to enhance my brain, if they do not cease to function.

The implications of such a thing has me wondering, because it is obviously the Nanos that are enabling me to even hear this conversation so far away. The effort of using this new-found ability seems to have a draining effect on me, and I suddenly find myself tired from the activity.

Jane returns some time later with my tray of food, and I need to force myself to sit up. I had been drifting in and out of sleep ever since listening in on the conversation in the next room. She sets the tray of creamy potatoes and puréed vegetables along with a warm bread roll with butter, down on the center of the trolley, and wheels it up close to me so I can eat. I pick up the fork, and even though I was dreaming of a thick piece of meat and baked potato, I knew that it would be the most easily digestible food for at least the first couple of days.

The food melts in my mouth and in no time, it is all gone, and I am looking for more. I turn to Jane who has been watching me eat. "That was unbelievably good, do you have any more for me? It takes a lot of energy to heal as fast as I have, you know."

Jane removes the trolley and smiles. "Now, just slow down there, big boy. Your stomach has been empty for a long time, and too much food could cause a lot more problems than it would solve."

"Ok, I will be good, but can you bring in my next meal a little earlier for me?"

Jane shakes her head as she smiles at me. "We will see how this one settles first, then maybe something a little more substantial could be arranged," suggests Jane, as she turns to leave the room with the empty tray.

I watch her go as the tight dress moves with her body. My mind races again and I yawn from what I suspect is a full belly, soon laying back and napping again.

Jane steps to the nurse's station just around the corner to see Doctor Worth sitting at one of the computers, typing away on his report. He looks up at her. "So, you fed our guest, did you?"

"Yes, and he ate it all in record time. I wonder if we shouldn't have increased his intake on the I.V. line while he was healing."

George leans back and stretches his arms. "There is no way we could have known how fast he was healing, but now that we know, I think we should make sure he gets the nutrition his body needs."

Jane steps around the end of the counter, and glances at the computer screen. "Is that your report to the Firm on Christopher?"

"Yes. I think they will find it interesting, judging from the results of their little machines in his head. Frankly, I can't believe how quickly they repaired all the damage."

"What will you do now?"

"After the tests have confirmed my suspicions, I will remove the battery pack and return to my normal practice, and the obligations I have to my regular patients."

"What will become of Christopher?"

"The plan is to release him back to his normal life and check on him every few months to make sure there are no further complications. Two days from now, he could be carving wood again at the furniture plant, where he is one of their best designers," smiles George, before he turns back to the keyboard.
