"If your implant fails a little, you will have a beautiful eyebrow scar" said Wanda.
Corey touched the wounded place. The wound, though treated by green-eyed girl, still hurt and apparently was quite deep.
"I heard that men with scars look more manly" he joked.
The girl smiled, but her eyes expressed concern. Probably she also didn't like the sudden turn of the action.
They were back at home now, a dark, rainy night was already outside the window. Eventually, they managed to earn some money today - the brothel owner was willing to cooperate when a blood-stained visitor came to him, threatening him with the police. Before they returned home, it had darkened and that was actually good - thanks to that they weren't attacked again.
Corey had no doubt who and why attacked them. Wanda also hadn't. Nobody would had.
"So we are finishing our short play in villains" the supersoldier sighed with a smile "it's time to play heroes."
"The fact they attacked you means that they resumed experiments?"
"Considering that the attackers were supersoldiers, yes."
Wanda rested her chin on her hand, she was stressed.
"But after all, they hurried to get to me" Corey continued, "these guys didn't have any training, they only had implants. There were four of them, so more supersoldiers were sent to me and they died during the journey..."
"Or they found out how to survive having implants" Wanda interrupted, "or the Hildreths are sitting somewhere not far away from here."
Corey bit his lip. All these options were possible, though he doubted what Wanda had said. David and Jeffrey wouldn't fly all over Russia to settle somewhere near him. And building a new facility would take more time. So there are only two options - either they came here literally over corpses, or learned how to make the implants not burn out. This second option, although sensible, was unimaginable. Within a few months to make such a jump? On the other hand, Jeffrey probably wouldn't agree to send so many uncertain objects to take over one person. Well, unless Corey was wrong about how much the oldman cares about him.
"What we gonna do now?" the girl asked suddenly.
A plan was needed. The supersoldier had prepared it, or at least the very beginning of it.
"Now we'll go to sleep" he explained, turning to his roommate, "and tomorrow we're going on tour."
"Where?"
"To St. Petersburg, it is quite a way from here."
"What is in St. Petersburg?"
Corey tried not to wince. He felt more and more discomfort and stress due to the vision of meeting Jeffrey and David again.
"Institution in Surgut was the main base of the 'Mirage'" he explained "but not the first one. The first was in Petersburg, I would even say that it all started over there. I can't promise you that we'll find those freaks out there, but they definietly were there right after the mess in Surgut. It's a safe area for them, about which know only I and a few other, most trusted people."
"What if we don't find them there?"
"At least we'll find out where they decided to move, when it got a little calmer."
"Do they have a lot of institutions?"
"Five in Russia alone."
Wanda sighed again. Corey wondered what she was thinking about now. He himself was definitely in a bad mood - on the one hand he's gonna soon meet people whom he hoped never to see again, on the other hand, the time to play with this girl was going to an end. When they get rid of the Hildreths, she will return to America. His life was getting sadder. It's stupid to fall in love with someone who's not able and not even should return your feelings. Not to mention the limited time.
