This is yet to be edited.

For the most part of the morning, I stayed in my room. I was listening to music and hugging my pillow. Then around 10am I got hungry. So I went to the kitchen to get some cereal.

While I was pouring some milk on my cereal bowl, I got a text. I thought for sure it would be Nairobi. So I was surprised when I saw Sunny’s name. Hey. You’re not coming to school?

I put the milk carton down on the countertop to type my reply. Nope. Not feeling okay. I looked at the cuckoo clock in our kitchen and saw that it wasn’t time for recess yet. I smiled as I realized that he doesn’t always follow the rules.

Before I could pick back up the milk carton, I got another text. For some reason, I got excited that he replied. I hope you feel better.

I typed Thanks. Then I added for your concern. Then I deleted it and decided to put a smiley instead.

We texted for the rest of the morning. He certainly saved me from boredom. There’s a reason kids my age aren’t home during weekday mornings, the shows suck. I turned the TV on for like five minutes. Fifteen channels later, I realized nothing good was on.

Around lunchtime, I got a text from Nai. But she used Sunny’s phone. Apparently, her mom took her phone last night on account of her ‘overtexting.’ I bet Nai was pissed off about that. It wasn’t just about her not having a phone. It was more about her mom taking away her dad’s gift. Yep, Nai’s phone was Mr. Rivera’s gift to her for her birthday last year. Her dad was struggling financially during that time, so it took a lot of hard work for him to save up enough money to get her that phone.

What happened to you? She asked immediately after telling me she borrowed Sunny’s phone.

Just not feeling well.

If it’s about what happened yesterday, well… You’re gonna have to get used to it, love.

I rolled my eyes after reading her message. But then I realized that by tomorrow, I should deal better with seeing Cai and Fifer together. Besides, the whole point of me staying home today was so I could recover from being lovesick. I guess Sunny was helping me get my mind off Cai.

Where’s Sunny? I replied.

Beside me. Why?

He can read my replies?

No. Why? I smell something fishy.

I smiled and then changed the topic. So I was texting with Nai all afternoon until their class ended. In her last text she told me that she would drop by my house. So I went down from my room to the living room to wait for her.

When the doorbell finally rang, I rushed out the front door to the gate. But when I opened it, I didn’t see Nairobi. Instead, I saw Sunny with his schoolbag and holding sheets of paper.

To say I was shocked is an understatement. To say I was embarrassed is another. I was wearing a white oversized shirt over my loud pink dotted bra and yellow shorts. My hair was in a messy bun. And to top it all off, I was wearing my PowerPuff Girls plushy slippers!

“Hi,” he said with a smile.

“What are you doing here???” I said quite inhospitably.

He showed me one of the papers in his hand. It was a note. From, guess who, Nairobi! Hey Dune. Sorry, I forgot that mom was going to pick me up from school today. But to make it up to you, I sent him. (Arrow pointing upwards) I hope he didn’t get lost. But if you’re reading this, yay! He didn’t get lost! I love you. You better be in school tomorrow. XO Nai.
