Nairobi kept explaining and apologizing. When she asked for two tickets to the concert, she thought her mom would automatically think that the second ticket was for me. However, her mom thought very differently. To cut the long story short, I didn’t have a ticket to the concert.

“I’m so sorry, Dune,” she said sincerely.

“Hey, it’s okay. It was a simple miscommunication. Don’t worry about it,” I said.

“I’ll make it up to you, I swear.”

“Just study your reviewer and we can call it even,” I said.

Okay, to be honest, I was kind of bummed that I wasn’t going to the concert. But I didn’t have hard feelings. I was only disappointed because of all the hype Nai created about the concert. I guess in retrospect, it was more about having a night out with my best friend than being at an Owl City concert.

Maybe it would do Nairobi some good to spend some time with Kyle. After all, they’ll be living together for the next couple of years. However, Nai told me in our phone conversation that ‘babysitting’ Kyle would semi-ruin the concert experience for her.

The next day, I told my parents about the ticket mishap. My dad was visibly glad about it. He told me that maybe I could spend next weekend with my mom in her pottery class. I wasn’t really interested. My mom wanted me to call Cairo and tell him Nairobi wasn’t taking me anymore. My dad advised against it. I wasn’t thrilled by the thought, either. I didn’t want Cairo to think that his little brother’s invitation was my last resort to attending the concert. Like I said, it was more about being with my best friend. If I call up Cairo and accept Ram’s invitation, then we go to the concert and I spend the whole night with Nairobi, it would just be rude.

I spent my whole weekend at home. My mom and I baked a cake on Saturday. Well, she baked it, I handed her the stuff she needed. It was delicious. One of these days, I should give in to one of her occasional offers to teach me how to bake.

Monday came and my mom dropped me off to school. Before I got out of the car, mom gave me a paper bag. I looked inside and, to my delight, found big chocolate chip cookies! A smile grew on my face.

“Thanks, mom!”

“Oh sweetie, that’s for Cairo,” she said with a smile.

“What?” my smile faded. Then I looked at the tempting cookies again.

“I thought that you could give them to him before you ask him to take you to that concert,” she explained.

“Mom, I’m not going to ask him to take me after I turned him down.”

“But honey, that was way back when you thought Nairobi was taking you. Like you said, it was a simple miscommunication. He’d understand. And I think he’d be thrilled to take you.”

“But mom, I don’t wanna ‘use’ him just so I could go to the concert,” I protested.
