After our last subject, home economics, I walked Nairobi to the auditorium. This was gonna be their first rehearsal where they had to deliver their lines from memory. I hope she would fare well. As for me, I was going to wander the streets.
Okay, that was a hyperbole. But really, I was going to wander the streets looking for a good rental shop. I’ve been going around every place I know for the past two days but I haven’t found a rental shop that had any clothes remotely similarly to what we needed.
“Break a leg,” I told Nairobi as I was about to leave.
“Good luck finding my dress, love,” she smiled at me.
Sunny approached me before I could leave. He said he would come with me if he could. I told him not to worry about it. I knew he already had a lot of responsibilities and I didn’t have to be another one. He told me to take care and wished me luck in finding a rental shop.
As I walked out of the auditorium and down the hallways, I thought about where else I could possibly go and look for a rental shop. Who knew it would be this hard? Maybe I should have asked Nairobi if she had any ideas where to look. Yes! That’s a good idea. At least I’ll get some help. The other people in charge of costumes are probably on their way home now.
I turned around with the full intention of going to Nairobi. But I found someone else. He was walking towards me with a cute smile on his face. Guess who.
“Hey,” he said.
“Um, hi,” I said, scratching my head.
“Are you gonna look for rental shops?”
“Yep, right after I ask Nairobi where I can find any. I’ve went to every place I know and, well… still looking,” I said. He just smiled at me.
“I think I might know a place,” he said. “I can take you there.”
“What? Um, I mean… thanks, but… aren’t you supposed to be doing props or something?”
“Yeah, I’m gonna buy some materials. But there’s a shop where I can buy the materials on the way to the rental shop I’m telling you about.”
“Oh, but…” I was trying to find an excuse so we wouldn’t have to go somewhere together.
“Let’s go,” he held my hand and led me down the hallways. It was the first time we held hands after he came back. Our hands touched when we were at Salazars’ Bookstore, but this time was different. We were actually holding hands while walking. He only let go when we were already outside the school.
Okay, you’ve probably guessed it by now. It was Cairo.
We walked quietly for a while. I got to thinking why I was so hesitant to go somewhere with Cai. He was already a friend of mine. Right? I already settled this. Didn’t I? I’m not going to overanalyze every little thing he does anymore. Am I? Ugh.
I checked my phone to see the time. It was already 4:50. Fifer’s class would end in a few minutes. Why was he leaving school? Were they having problems? I haven’t seen them together in a while. Or maybe my eyes have just been fixed on someone else these last few weeks and that’s why I haven’t been noticing him and Fifer.
“We’re looking for clothes fit for royalty, right?” he spoke.
“Um, yeah,” I said. He just nodded. Then we walked in silence again.
“Are you nervous for tomorrow?” he looked at me.
“I’ve been nervous since Monday,” I told him.
