When I got to the front of my house, a surprise was at the gate. Cairo was standing outside my house. How did he find it? When he saw me, he walked to me right away.

“H-Hi Dune,” he said, looking nervous.

“Hi,” I tried to sound friendly. “What brings you here?”

“Actually, I was planning on waiting for you after school. But I lost you, so I texted Nairobi and asked her for your address,” he said.

“So, um… Why did you want to see me?”

“I…um…” he took a second to open his bag and take out a piece of paper folded into a heart. It was colored with red crayon. It kind of reminded me of kindergarten. “This is… it’s… for you,” he handed me the heart.

I carefully unfolded it. ‘Cause, how awkward would it have been if I had accidentally torn it, right?

I’ve got tickets to the Owl City concert next Saturday. Would you go with me? Please?

Hiram

When I started reading the note, I was thinking, this is impossible! Then, when I read the name signed at the bottom, I was just… like… Seriously?

“He told me not to go home unless I’ve given you that invitation… So…” he scratched his head. “Do you wanna go out with me—I mean, Ram. Hiram. Do you wanna go to the concert with him? I mean, I’ll be there, too. I’ll be like a chaperone,” he smiled.

“I… This is… It’s really cute. And sweet,” I looked at the letter again.

“Yeah, he’s quite a charmer.”

“Kind of reminds me of a boy I met back in kindergarten,” I murmured.

“Sorry, what was that?”

“Oh, I said that, um, he… he takes after you,” I smiled at him. It’s not like I was lying. The way Ram wrote me that invitation did remind of the way Cairo would write to me back when we were in kindergarten.

“He’s much better with the ladies,” he smiled back. “So… You’re accepting the invitation?”

“I’d love to,” I said. A smile grew on his face. Then I remembered Nairobi was already taking me!!! Argh! How could I have forgotten??? “But,” I said after I remembered. The smile on his face faded.

“But?” he asked.

“Nairobi beat Hiram to it. She already asked me to go with her, and…”

“And you’ve already said yes,” he completed my sentence.
