Before I knew it, it was Friday. The weekend was just around the corner. I could already imagine myself sleeping in, going to the movies, shopping in the mall… Relaxing!
Am I the only one who’s ever thought that there’s something wrong with 5 days out of a week being school days? I mean, it should at least be 4 days of school and 3 days of rest. I think that’s more balanced.
Ms. Tiu gave us the usual Friday homework. She’s our only teacher who gives us homework every Friday to intentionally make us study on the weekend. Most of our other teachers were just as excited as we were for the weekend.
Mr. de la Vega gave his class time again for us to prep for the Nutrition Month celebration. He spent time helping out each of the contestants. He went to me, Nairobi, and Cai last.
“How are you guys doing? Are you reading the reviewers I gave you?” he asked enthusiastically.
“Yes, sir. We’ve already divided the categories among ourselves,” Cai said.
“Very good. Do you think you’re ready for a trial quiz bee next week?” Mr. de la Vega asked.
“I guess it depends on which day next week we’re talking about,” Nairobi said.
“I was thinking Friday so you guys would have more time to review,” Mr. de la Vega answered.
“I’m fine with that,” I said.
Nairobi and Cai agreed. A trial quiz bee would be great to test how much we’ve learned from our reviewers. But I was thinking about doing more studying in the library next week. I can’t just rely on the reviewer Mr. de la Vega gave me. However, I haven’t decided whether to bring Nairobi and Cai along. Nairobi might not be up for it. Cai might not have the time.
Our last subject for the day was physical education. The activity was basketball. The boys and girls were separated, of course. But since there were only five boys in class, someone had to sit one out. Jael volunteered to keep score instead of play.
Ms. Guinto, our P.E. teacher, knew that she didn’t have to pay much attention to the boys during the activity. They already knew what to do. So Ms. Guinto paid more attention to us girls. Most of us needed a lot of mentoring from the sidelines on how to dribble the ball, pass it, and shoot. I think I fared well. I didn’t manage to score, but at least I knew how to dribble and pass.
After the game, we were all sweaty. The boys, except Jael, seemed to have enjoyed their game very much. We girls were just mainly tired. In my case, I wanted to go home and rest ASAP. Nairobi got picked up by Mrs. Villanueva. It’s kind of weird calling Nai’s mom ‘Mrs. Villanueva’ now after six years of calling her ‘Mrs. Rivera.’
With Nairobi gone, I’d have had to walk home alone. I’ve done it before. I mean, it’s not the first time Nai’s mom had picked her up. A few times, they’ve given me rides home. But today was one of those days when they were heading somewhere before going home and I couldn’t tag along.
I would have been glad to walk, if I wasn’t tired from playing basketball. So I took out my phone to call mom and ask her to get me. I even thought that maybe we could buy dinner on the way home. But then, I realized that my phone battery was dead. Just great.
Before I could start my walk home, someone called my name. I turned and saw Sunny running towards me. After a few seconds, he was already in front of me.
“Hey,” he said, panting a little.
“Hey,” I parroted. “What’s up?”
“You’re walking home alone?” he asked.
