(This took place a few years before the strike)

Mike woke up with a smile on his face, it was his birthday today, but most importantly it was Ike, his twin's birthday today! They were turning twelve! Mike saved up months to get Ike the perfect present, he was going to get Ike a new toy train. Ike was obsessed with trains and he was often found staring through the window at the toy store, staring at the toy trains. Mike couldn't afford a cool electric one, so he would have to make do with a wooden one.

Mike could just imagine Ike's smile! Mike skipped cheerfully to grab his papes, so he could sell them quickly. "25 papes please!" Mike exclaimed giving his coins to Weasel.

"You seem like your in a good mood today," Race commented. Ike put his arm around Mike.

"It's our birthday!" Ike exclaimed with a huge smile.

"We know," Romeo said rolling his eyes. Mike and Ike were talking about their birthday for weeks now, but who could blame them, they were excited!

Mike sold his papers with the help of exaggerated titles, so he made his way to the toy store. On his way there he was stopped. "Look what we got 'ere Morris," Mike instantly recognized that voice. It belonged to Oscar Delancey.

"Come on Oscar leave the kid alone," his brother said, trying to continue on his way. Oscar, however, didn't move.

"I just want to see what he's up ta," Oscar stated, "Where you headin'?"

Oscar terrified Mike. Mike was a scrawny twelve-year-old and Oscar was fourteen! Mike didn't want to mess them, so he had no choice but to comply. "I-I'm just headin' ta get a train for my brother, it's our birthday today," Mike answered.

"Then let's make this a birthday you won't forget," Oscar said pounding his fists together.

"Oscar. Leave the kid alone," Morris said.

"Don't forget who's older Morris," Oscar turned to Morris and gave him a slight push. Oscar turned back to Mike, "Now it's your turn." Oscar lifted his fist.

"Oscar. Stop," Morris said pulling Oscar's fist down, "He's just a kid and it's his birthday. Let's leave him be."

Oscar full on pushed Morris now, causing him to stumble back. "Mom would be disappointed in you," Oscar walked away and Morris regained his balance. Morris looked to Mike but didn't say anything before walking away. Oscar's logic didn't make sense to Mike, why would their mom be disappointed that he didn't beat someone up.

Mike shook those thoughts off and started racing towards the toy store. He had to reach it before it closed. Mike was determined to make this the best birthday ever for his brother.

Mike burst into the toy store just as the owner was getting ready to turn the open sign to closed, "I would like to buy a wooden train please!" Mike said digging around in his pocket for the money. He set it all down on the counter.

"You need one more penny," the owner said. Mike searched his pocket, but he had no more money he could use, he needed it to get back into the lodging house.

"That's all I have," Mike said defeated. He just wanted his brother to be happy. Ike was the best brother in the world and deserved an amazing birthday. Mike collected his money back up and made his way to the door.

As he opened it, he was stopped by the owner, "Tell you what kid, you don't need the other penny."

"Really?" Mike asked. The owner nodded his head. Mike quickly paid for it and ran back to the lodging house, it was almost dark out now.

As Mike burst into the lodging house, he was greeted by a worried Ike, "There you are Mike! I was afraid you got hurt or lost!"

"I had to get something," Mike said holding up the train. Ike's eyes went big.

"A train!" Ike exclaimed causing everyone to look over at them, "Mike I love it!" Seeing Ike's smile was definitely worth all he went through today. Ike's smile however quickly faded.

"What's wrong?" Mike asked. He was concerned why was his brother upset?

"This makes my present seem lame," Ike said sadly.

"Nonsense I'll love whatever you get me!" Mike exclaimed. Ike sheepishly walked over to the table and picked up a piece of paper.

"It's a card," Ike said as he handed it to Mike. The front said 'Happy Birthday' in messy letters, "the other boys helped me with the writing," Ike explained.

Mike opened it up and a smile grew over his face. It was a drawing of Ike and him with the words 'To the best brother ever' written on it. "I love it!" Mike exclaimed happily.

This was certainly the best birthday ever.
