"I am the one who knows you."
"Eliza," Alexander said standing behind her, "I'm sorry."
"How could you do this Alexander?" Eliza asked quietly, her voice breaking, tears flowing down her cheeks.
Eliza stood up and faced Alexander. He could clearly see her face. Her eyes were puffy and red, her cheeks and face pale white. In her hands, she was holding one of the letters between Alexander and her when they first started talking.
"I thought I knew you, Alexander, apparently I didn't."
Eliza ripped up the handwritten letter sent to her by the very husband who betrayed her and her trust. She let the pieces fall to the ground and they blew away in the wind. Eliza didn't care anymore."I am the one who cares."
"Eliza! Wait!" Alexander yelled after Eliza.
Eliza turned back around, "I always cared for you Alexander, I always loved you. And you turn around and do this," Eliza answered holding up the pamphlet in front of Alexander's face, "The whole world knows about this. The whole world." Eliza's voice became quiet as she repeated that last part.
"I'm sorry," Alexander said picking up Eliza's hand in his.
Eliza pulled her hand away, "Sorry isn't enough.""I am the one who's always been there"
Tears poured out of Eliza's eyes as she remembered everything she and Alexander had been through.
She remembered those late nights when Alexander wrote to her about how frustrated he was about not getting his own command of a battalion.
Eliza ALWAYS responded with positivity and love.
She was always there for him, comforting him through every little bad thing.
Every time Alexander was angry at Jefferson, every time Alexander has a bad cabinet meeting, she was always there.
"I am the one who's helped you."Eliza would always help Alexander.
She helped him through anything.
Helped him with his ideas.
Helped him with his writing.
Helped him with nightmares
Helped him with dissatisfactions and frustrations.
She even helped him get over Washington stepping down for president.
The list could go on and on.
She couldn't wrap her head around why Alexander would do this to her."And if you think I don't give a damn. Then you just don't know who I am."
Did Alexander really think that releasing this pamphlet would be a good idea?
That all of these accusations would go away?
That Eliza would just not care?
She was hurt.
This affected everything.
Their whole lives ruined.
Destroyed.
