John had spent his whole life avoiding love. You see, in the world he lived in, you had a tattoo when you were born. It wasn't just any tattoo, however, it was the first words your soulmate would ever say to you. Most people's were like "hello", mundane things that made it hard to figure out your real soulmate. Other people's could be more specific, like "My name is ___". They had it easy. But in John's case, it was a bit different. He didn't have a tattoo at all. He had searched every inch of his body for it and would get made fun of for not having one. So he decided he didn't have a soulmate, therefore he never really loved anyone other than his parents, because he thought that if they weren't your soulmate, what was the purpose? You were allowed to not be in love with your soulmate and marry someone else, but it wouldn't be the same.
On the other side of town, Jaren knew exactly where his tattoo was. It had been on his wrist since the day he was born. He just had no idea what it meant. All it said was "I do". Did that mean the first time his soulmate spoke to him would be at their wedding? He was never sure, until one day he decided to go to a different coffee shop than his usual one.
John's shift was almost over, and he was hella tired. The line in the coffee shop was super long, but luckily he wouldn't have to deal with it soon. He was in the back making a drink for someone when his coworker yelled into the back,
"Anyone know sign language?" John perked up and came out front.
"I do!" He said, and Jaren eyes widened.
I mean, anyone can say "I do." But maybe it is him. Jaren thought to himself as John finished telling his coworker how to finish the drink he was working on. John looked at Jaren finally and his heart started to beat quickly. He had never felt this way before, and it kinda scared him.
"Deaf or mute?" John signed, and Jaren was taken out of his state of shock.
"Mute" He signed back, and John nodded.
"Alright then, what can I get you?"
After John had served Jaren his drink and he had sat down with it, John's shift had officially ended. The store had died down too, so he was ok with leaving. As he walked by Jaren, John's heart betrayed his brain and caused him to walk over to him.
"Mind if I sit here?" John asked and Jaren shook his head and John sat down. They sat in awkward silence for a second before Jaren's heart betrayed his mind too. He held out his wrist to John, and John slowly read the tattoo.
"I mean, maybe. It's just that I don't have a tattoo. Which either means I don't have a soulmate or they just never talk to me..." John said sadly before his brain slowly started to turn again. Thoughts were connecting and John got a huge smile on his face. Jaren was confused, and a little sad the guy he had hoped was his soulmate, wasn't. "That's it! I don't have a tattoo because my soulmate doesn't talk. He's mute!" Jaren smiled this time too, and John held out his hand to him, inviting him to stand up. "Want to go somewhere with me? I'd really like to get to know you." John said happily and Jaren took his hand and stood.
"Let's go!" Jaren signed in response, and the two happily strolled out of the coffee shop.
