Jaren walked slowly through the abandoned town, with John close behind. Both of their nerves were high, but they needed somewhere to sleep, and this small town was their only option. Jaren held a hand ax tightly, but John was unarmed. He walked freely and happily and seemed almost ignorant of the fact that the world had turned to shit. It helped keep Jaren's spirits up, and he was more than thankful. They walked past an old supermarket, and though Jaren was scared, he knew he had to check for forgotten food or supplies.

"Come on Jaren. We have to. I'll protect you." John reassured him, and Jaren took a deep breath. He looked at his ax, tightened the bag on his back, and stepped into the store. The registers were desolate, and beyond them stood a maze of forgotten shelves and uncertainty.

"I'll go left, you go right. If you see anyone, yell and run." Jaren advised, and John nodded in agreement. Jaren walked carefully to the right of the registers and looked down the aisles. Most of the shelves were empty or had rotting food on them, but the thing that scared him most was the last aisle. There was no way to see what was down it before turning the corner, and the fluorescent lights going down that aisle weren't lit. Jaren took another deep breath, raised his ax, and turned the corner.

He sighed a breath of relief as he looked down the aisle and saw more empty shelves. Jaren slowly walked down the aisle to the back of the store when he felt a hand grab onto his shoulder. He quickly spun around and slashed his ax toward the person. John moved out of the way just in time for the swing to miss his stomach.

"Jesus dude!" Jaren yelled and John started to laugh.

'Well, that was almost really bad." John said in between laughs.

"I could have killed you! Don't do that again." Jaren scolded him, and John quickly stopped laughing.

"Sorry, babe. I was just trying to tell you there wasn't anything on my side of the store." John said seriously and Jaren nodded.

"Yeah, me neither. We have enough food to last another day or two, so let's find somewhere to sleep." Jaren walked away from John and he quickly followed.

The two boys walked through the town looking for a house before finally finding a small home down a side street of the main road. They looked at each other silently, nodded, and Jaren slowly opened the door. It creaked loudly and they cringed at the sudden noise, scared it would alert any people in the house. They stood silently, awaiting noise from inside the house, and once the coast was clear, Jaren stepped inside. He carefully turned each corner of the house just as he had in the store. The two made their way up to the second floor, checked all the rooms, and finally found a bedroom with a pretty decent mattress. Jaren, whle still wearing his bag and clothes, laid on the bed and almost instantly fell asleep.

"I'll take first watch." John said, and Jaren smiled thankfully. "Goodnight, my love." John added, and as Jaren began to fall asleep, he began to weep silently. He opened his eyes one last time, to see an empty room, in an empty house, in an empty world.

If you couldn't tell by my clues, John was dead the whole time. Anyway, I have another request to write, but then I'm out of ideas so sorry if the updates slow for a bit. Once again, request are always open. Have a nice day/night, and you are lovely.
