"Uncle Sam?" I ask, climbing into my father's lap. "Where's Daddy?"
"He's busy, Zoi," he replied, pushing his mop dark brown hair out of his eyes. "We won't be seeing him for a while."
"But why?" I ask, puzzled. "He should be here, with us. We're his family."
"He knows that, sweetie. But he has work to do."
I snuggle closer to my uncle, and he warps his arms around me. We sit in silence, the noise of my cousin playing up stairs in the background.
"Where's Mommy?" I ask, turning to look up dad. "Why isn't she here?"
A sad smile forms on his face, but doesn't answer. He continues to rock in the chair, rubbing a stand of my dark hair in between his fingers.
I close eyes, falling asleep in the warm arms of my Uncle. Memories from when I was younger, when my dad was still here, filling my dreams. I can only remember flashes of a couple of years ago, dark hair in a buzz cut and dark brown hair.

I brush my hair back into a ponytail that rests just below my shoulder blades. My light blue eyes are brighter then they were earlier, looking more like crystals. Smoothing down my gray t-shirt, I walk into the living room.
"Mornin' Ella," my roommate sings, coming into the room from the kitchen.
"Morning, Anna," I reply, sitting down on one of the arm chairs. "What's up?"
"You got a message on the phone from some one named John," she tells me. "Do you want to call him back?"
"What?" I ask, shooting to my feet, startling Anna as I ran toward the landline. "Did he leave a number?"
"Yes, he did," she says, sounding confused. "Just listen to the message."
I fumble with the phone, panic fogging my brain, and dialing the voice messages. I pause, listening to the computerized female voice.
"Hello, this is John Winchester. I'm calling to talk to Zuriela who lives at this house. When you get this, Zoi, please call me back at 562-523-3244. Thank you much."
And the message ended. I replayed the message, scrambling around the kitchen for a piece of paper and a pen to write the number down on. After the message finishes for the second time, I delete it and turn around, leaning back against the wall.
"Ella, are you okay?" Anna asks, walking over to me.
"I'm fine, Anna," I tell her, smiling for emphasis. "It was just my cousin. I haven't heard from him in a while. I was just worried, that's all."
"You have a cousin? You never told me," Anna says, jumping up to sit on the counter. "What's he like?"
I look over at her and shake my head. Anna's long platinum blond hair is tied in a messy knot at the base of her neck and her blue eyes are as clear as water. Her lightly tanned skin glows in the florescent light. Anna's tie-dyed tee is tucked into her gray sweatpants. "From what I remember, a complete asshole, but we were ten the last time we saw each other."
"Is he coming over?" Anna asks, kicking her heels against the cabinet. "Are you going to invite him over?"
"I have to call him first, Anna," I say, rolling my eyes. "But he will most likely be coming over, whether I invite him or not."
"Well okay," she says, hopping off the counter. "I'll let you be so you can call him." And she walks out of the room.
I exhale loudly and pick up the phone again, dialing in the number written across the paper. The phone rings, once, twice, three times before some one picks up on the other end.
