Cole's POV

"Damn you Eros! Damn you from even the furthest pits of hell."
He let her down. My mate. She'll be crushed.
...
What do I do? How can I help? She's sitting here crying. And that blood sucker marked her and ran. Asshole.
"He left me."
Lyra looks at me with sad eyes. All I want to do is hold her and tell her everything will be ok, but I don't want to overstep my boundaries. Eros did, and look where that got us. She sighs, finally out of tears.
"Can I get out of this hospital bed? I've been in these things too often lately."
I didn't even think about that. She had been in one 8 days ago. She's only been with me a week and she's been in the hospital twice.
"I'm so sorry. I'm such a bad mate."
My wolf whimpers at the thought.
"It's fine. You didn't do anything, Cole."
I call for the doctor. He says that there isn't anything wrong, so we leave. She's quiet on the ride home and gets out of the car quickly. I watch as she runs into the castle.
I sigh. My beta walks out of the door.
"Met the Luna."
"Huh. Really? Was she crying by any chance?"
"Definitely not."
He was being sarcastic. And if I wasn't so upset, I would put him in the dungeon.
"Lucky man."
"What do you mean I'm a lucky man? My mate's losing her damn mind over another guy!"
"Wait what? That's why she's upset?"
"Did you not smell or see the vampire that passed you multiple times in the hallway?"
"Wow. Ok. Uhhhhh..."
"Uhhhhh. What? You're a horrible Beta sometimes, you know that? We could be invaded and you'd never know."
"I've been busy lately, dude."
"Don't 'dude' me. Not right now. I'm mad at you."
"Are you on your period or something? You're acting just like Troian on her period..."
"Maxon. You better choose your next words very carefully."
"I'm just gonna go run patrol now..."
"You better, Beta."
Maxon runs away and as he runs he shifts into his large grey wolf. He looks back at me and bows.
I sigh.
Now to take care of Mate.

Lyra's POV

I'm crying so hard I can't see through my eyes. I hit a wall like figure and I fall. The wall grabs my hand and picks me up. I mutter a quick thanks and run, hoping I wasn't noticed. I run to Cole's room and throw the door open. I rush to the bedside and sobs start racking my body. I shouldn't be hurting this much. I barely knew Eros.
The door opens.
"Lyly?"
Cole.
"Yes?"
Cole pauses and grabs my arm. He picks me up and puts me on the bed.
"Someone so beautiful shouldn't be crying."
I crack a small smile.
"Cheese ball."
"Only for you, lovely."
My heart flutters. I barely know Cole, too. What is going on today?
"Cole?"
"Yes amore?"
"Why does it hurt so much?"
"He marked you."
"What? What's marking?"
"It's the first step in completing the Mate bond."
"Mate bond...what's that?"
"We're mates. And you and Eros are too, sadly."
I whack Cole's chest, as if on instinct. I want to protect Eros, still after what he did to me.
"What is completing the Mate bond?"
"Well, first you get a mark, or a bite on your neck and then you have..."
"Have what? Sex?"
I laugh. Cole's face turns red.
"Oh shit. What? Wait really? No!"
"And there's a deadline. Or you'll go into something called heat. I can't explain it, but the basics are that you get unbearably hot, and if you don't do the deed, uh. Well..."
"Well what?"
"All the unmated males in the area will take you. To bed. And you'll go willingly until he comes back to finish..."
"But Eros is gone...oh shit."
Welp. I'm fucked.
