Dianne's POV
It gets to lunch, and we're all still so worried about AJ and Jack. Josh keeps on reminding us about his own experiences in hospital, saying over and over again that in due course AJ will be fine again.
Meanwhile, though, none of us know what has happened to Katya. She hasn't come into school, and for all we know she could be out harming other people.
"We need to ask Mr Johnson about Katya," I say. "We need to know where she is. What if-"
"Dianne, you always think of the worst possible outcomes," Joe says, putting an arm around me.
"But it's Katya," I say.
"She has a point," Conor says. "We know what she's done in the past. For all we know it could happen again."
"Ok fine. Maybe just one or two of us should go up to his office," Joe says. "I'll go, who else?"
"Me," I say quietly. "I want to know where she is. I was the one who befriended her in the first place."
"Not really. It was me, Chloe and Amy," Lauren says.
"It doesn't matter who befriended who. Dianne, you can come," Joe says.
"I want to. She put me in hospital," Josh says.
"Ok, us three will go," Joe says. He takes me by the hand and leads me out of the canteen area and over to the corridor where the Head of Houses offices are. We knock on the door to Mr Johnson's room and stand back and wait.
"Ah," Mr Johnson says. "I can almost guess what you're here about."
He lets us inside and Josh and I sit down on the chairs and Joe stands behind me, putting his hands on my shoulders.
"We want to know where Katya is," Josh says.
"Why do you think I'd know?" Mr Johnson replies. He sighs, and then sinks back into his own chair, picking up his coffee and taking a sip. "Ok, I know it's been hard. And what she's done to you all is beyond bad. When we find out where she is, we will expel her."
"But that doesn't change the current situation," I pipe up. "For all we know she could be causing harm to others."
"Well there really isn't anything we can do-" Mr Johnson starts, but I'm not having this.
"You have the contact numbers! Ring her parents!" I exclaim.
"Miss Buswell please calm down! Do you not think that we haven't tried that already? None of the contact numbers that we have done for her pick up, and we ring them every day," Mr Johnson says. Oh. I didn't realise that. "If any of you have any other suggestions, then I'm open. But off the top of my head, there really isn't anything I can do."
We sit in silence. What else can we do? Katya's just... Disappeared. Gone. Vanished. However you want to put it.
"I'm so sorry," Mr Johnson says.
"It's not your fault," I say.
"We just need to keep trying," Joe adds. "Do you have her address? Could maybe the headteacher pop around?"
"I guess we could give that a try," Mr Johnson responds. "I promise, when we have any new information, we will let you all know."
We head out of the room, stunned in silence. When the door closes shut I just can't help it anymore – I start to cry and Joe holds me tight.
"We will figure this out," Joe says. "I promise."
Jack's POV
"Yes."
I just admitted to liking AJ. Wow. I never thought I could do that. His mum doesn't reply, but then we hear stirring from the bed.
"AJ!"
"Jack? Mum?" AJ mumbles. "What?... Where?..."
"Katya attacked you," I say. "You're in hospital."
"Geez, that girl," AJ says.
"You don't remember it?" AJ's mum asks.
"The memories are all a little blurred."
The doctor then comes over and deals with AJ. I'm just left there, sitting awkwardly, waiting for what will happen next.
When the doctor leaves, AJ speaks again.
"Jack, listen, I need to talk to you. Mum, can you give us a second?" AJ says. His mum leaves the ward and I'm left alone with AJ. "I don't know how else to put this, so I'm just going to say it now. I like you. In... that way."
"I like you too. In that way," I say. It's perfect. Well almost. We are still in hospital after all.
Dianne's POV
Joe let me come back to his house after school again. The two of us are walking home from the bus stop, and he lets us both in.
"Dianne, there's someone here to see you," Tracey says. I feel my throat getting dry.
"Can Joe see them with me?" I ask. Tracey nods. Joe doesn't stop holding my hand as we head into the living room.
"Dianne?"
It can't be.
