I finished straightening the last strand of hair just as his car pulled in the driveway. I grimaced and closed my eyes, I was not ready for this.

You can do this!

Inhale.

You can do this!

Exhale.

Deep breaths.

It's okay.

"You okay Honey?" I opened my eyes, startled, to see my mom standing over me. I let out a nervous laugh.

"Yeah... Fine." I lied. No, I was most definitely not okay. I wasn't about to tell her that. She smiled.

"Don't think you can lie to me." She said teasingly. Her eyes softened. "You're not fine." I fixed my gaze on the floor, avoiding eye contact.

"Relax Mom, it'll be okay. We might even work it out!" I said with fake enthusiasm. She let out a sigh.

"I'm letting you go, but you have to tell me all about it when you get home OK?" She confirmed. I smiled.

"Of course I will Mom."

"Good." She smoothed away imaginary wrinkles in my dress. "You look beautiful Kayla." she said proudly. I examined myself in the mirror. I looked alright.

Okay that was a lie. I looked damn good. That woman knew how to work her magic. I was wearing a casual flowy red dress that went to almost my knees but not quite. I had black leather ankle boot heels with a matching thin black leather coat. My makeup was edgy but not attention grabbing, black eyeliner with a bit of mascara and dark red lips. My hair was flat ironed to perfection. I definitely gave off the "Don't mess with me" look, while maintaining girly and pretty. Exactly what I wanted. Show Will that however much I may like him, I don't need him. I'm strong!

I'm not feeling too strong.

The panic is settling in.

Mom slapped my wrist as I began to chew on my lip out of habit.

"Stop that!" She hissed. "You're going to ruin your lipstick!" I rolled my eyes.

"Yes Mom" I complied while running down the stairs to get the door. He knocked just as I reached the door. I paused, looking in the hall mirror.

'You're a strong and confident woman, Kayla! You don't need a man in your life, this is purely out of choice! If he makes one wrong move you're going to throw him to the curb!' Feeling confident with my pep talk, I strode towards the door, heels clicking on the tiles.

I swung the door open, revealing Will standing on the porch. He wore a pair of beige khakis and a dark blue knit sweater. He smiled sweetly and held his hand out. I looked down, and almost felt like throwing up when I saw what was in it.

A pink rose. The same ones I told him I hated on the first date, the same ones he did not give me once in our entire relationship until the past few weeks.

The same ones he asked me to prom with.

"Oh." I said staring down at it and smiling weakly. "Th- thanks. It's, um, pretty?" the end of the sentence came out as a question instead.

"Thanks!" He smiled brightly. "I know they're your favorite."

What. The. Hell. I almost contemplated ditching him right then and there, but I had to give him a chance.
