Chapter 23

"How...?" I trailed off in awe, feeling the soft blue material beneath my fingers. "How did you get this?" Tears of joy pricked the corners of my eyes.

"Don't worry. I just want you to be happy." My mom said gently.

"But- but-" My mouth flapped open and closed as I tried to form words. "But it was like a million dollars!" I protested.

"Not quite." She laughed slightly. I turned to see Summer, Evie and Carly smiling at me. My hand immediately shot up to my neck where my new necklace rested and looked at the ring on my finger.

"You knew!" I accused, pointing at my friends. "You got me matching jewlery! You knew!" I shrieked, so happy I didn't really know what to do.

"We've been planning this ever since the day you saw it." Summer laughed as she leant against the doorframe.

"Oh my god! Thank you so much!" I shouted, flapping my arms in the air. "I'm going to go try it on!" I shouted excitedly, running to the bathroom. I locked the door behind me, taking a deep breath.

This felt like a dream. When I saw this dress in the store, I knew I had to get it somehow. And then I dropped the idea when I saw the pricetag. I slowly slipped the dress on, closing my eyes as I did up the back. I slowly turned to the mirror, opening my eyes-

Oh my god. I think I actually let out a gasp, it was way better than I remembered. The pale blue silk cascaded down my legs in bunches. Slowly I twisted the door handle open and stepped out cautiously. I stepped into the room, doing a slight twirl as my smile grew bigger.

"Oh Kayla!" My mom cried, hugging me. "You look beautiful!" I smiled, hugging her back.

"Your father would have been proud of you." She whispered into my ear. My smile faltered.

It was moments like this I wished I could have a perfect family.

"I'm not happy with this." Toni informed.

"I know." I sighed. She huffed as she got her makeup bag out.

"Just because I'm helping you get ready does not in any way mean that I am okay with this."

"I know." I sighed again. We had been through this many times.

"You're not even listnening."

"I kno- I mean, yeah I am." I said, cheeks flushed. Toni rolled her eyes.

"Now what are you wearing again?" She asked, humming under her breath.

"White lace shirt, black jeans, yellow flats." I repeated.

"Oh my god this is gonna look amazing!" She gushed, pulling her top-of-the-line makeup brushes out. "Sit still."

I complied, closing my eyes. Sure, Carly, Evie and Charelle were good makeup artists, but Toni was the best.

She was also the only one who would have anything to do with my redo date with Liam.

I understand how they were upset at what happened and all, but it kind of made me mad. I was eighteen years old, I could handle myself perfectly fine without them dictating my life.

"You know they're just looking out for you." Toni murmured, almost as if reading my thoughts. I let out a long breath of air, thinking it through.

"I know." I said reluctantly. "But it's getting a bit over the top." She shrugged, clucking her toung.
