Animagus

In which people can just casually use their animagus forms after they hit age 16 - so pretty much every 6th-7th-8th year at Hogwarts just hangs out in their animal forms. These guys are 8th years in this.

If you asked Harry, flying was one of the best feelings in the world, with or without a broom. His head tilted down, glassy eyes catching the flashes of gold crashing through the undergrowth below him.

His hunter.

Constantly gaining every second, Harry pushed on faster. The wind cut against his face, deep green forest rushed beneath him in a blur of dangerous vines and yet he was unable to shake the gold hunter.

And he fell. Practically dragged out of the sky by the bounding creature. While he had seen it coming - this happened every other day - he was still prompted out of his small animal form if only to yell at his triumphant hunter.

"C'mon Ron! I should be allowed to fly higher, especially since you learnt to jump like that," Harry waved an annoyed arm up at the dark canopy, vaguely gesturing to the area where he had fallen. He stood back. Arms folded carefully and glaring down at the - admittedly quite clumsy - golden labrador that was a little ways away from his feet, panting heavily.

The longer he stared, the more he realised that it was practically impossible to stay mad at a golden lab, or his best mate. Harry's arms dropped from their folded position, one raking through his hair and the other flopping lamely by his side.

"Alright, you win. Back to Hogwarts then?"

He waited, and the dog stood up - stretching out his front and back legs before beginning to trot back towards the castle.

"Oi, wait up!" Harry hurriedly shift into his smaller form, hopping in place a little in hopes of dispelling the sick feeling he got in his stomach before taking off after Ron.

Spotting Hermione on a weekend was never too difficult when returning to the castle, if she was outside - which she normally was these days - she would be practicing her gliding in the courtyard or simply helping the younger kids with bird animagi learn to control themselves better.

If she wasn't outside, she had a few favourite spots where she enjoyed curling up for the day.

It so happened that today she was in the common room, curled up on the corner of one of the over-stuffed sofas, with a load of what could have been homework perched delicately in her lap. She glanced up slightly when the two boys walked in, acknowledging them with a brief nod and shuffle from her spot to make room for them.

Harry smiled at her nonchalant nature, when he and Ron had first started practicing using their animagus forms in the forest Hermione had worried and fussed over them for at least half an hour when they came back.

After a week or two she grew used to the pattern - even going so far as to glide over them when they went out.

As he sat, reasonably casually next to ron's sprawling form, he took his chance to survey the rest of the room. He saw Neville's lion form resting comfortable by the fire, while Ginny was sat on the couch with Luna's incredibly bright phoenix form floating in the air of the room. There were a few other people littered around the room - animagus or otherwise.

There was one person who he didn't recognise, though - a siamese cat animagus was stretched elegantly across the windowsill, basking in the fast-fading sunlight. He saw no hints of who it may be, and looked around the room for clues. Pansy was relaxing on the sill next to the cat, though that was her favourite spot to sit.

There was no one else nearby, and too many people not present to draw any conclusions.

As the days blurred by, Harry became more and more fascinated by this seemingly mysterious animagi. Especially after neither Hermione nor Ron had known who it was, he had taken following them from place to place and hoping that he could catch a glimpse of who it might be.

He had gotten close once, hearing them change from just around a corner but before Harry had been able to jump out, Malfoy turned the corner, crashed into him, and sent  him to the ground. He had resisted the urge to insult him.

When Harry had gotten up, he was disappointed to find that whoever the siamese cat animagi belonged to had disappeared.

Now you may ask exactly why Harry had become so fascinated by this animagi, well to put it a simply as possible - the person behind it was obviously someone he knew, someone who probably hadn't gotten their animagus form until somewhat recently and someone who appeared to be extremely kind hearted.

In the days of following the cat, he had watched it scoop up a 6th year with a fluffly grey kitten animagus from the ground where they had fallen and take them to the courtyard. He had then proceeded to show the little kitten how to walk without stumbling too much. Those 'how to be a cat' lessons still continued.

The siamese has also helped many younger or more clumsy bird animagi down from where they had gotten stuck in trees around the grounds. The cat was an exceptionally good climber, having scaled large trees in less than 5 seconds on a daily basis.

Harry had even watched the cat bravely leap into the lake to help rescue a puppy from drowning. That one had scared a lot of students, lots of them had been worried for their new cat avenger and their terrified friend as they struggled back to safety together.

There were countless other things this cat had done in a few short days, and each one only sparked Harry's curiosity. No matter how insistent the siamese was on keeping their identity a secret, Harry was absolutely desperate to figure out who was behind the graceful animal. Every one knows that Harry always figures thins out at one point or another.

At least that's what he want to think.
