II. Love is Poison

The tea was his favorite; Jasmine.  Jade thankfully took the cup and blew into it. She grasped it firmly to stop her hands from shaking too much.

"So" William said while motioning. Jade to sit across from him. "You are a Shenigami... I never thought I would see the day I meet one of you."

Jade blushed lightly and nodded. "I never thought I would see the day that I would go out in public.  My mother was very protective of me."

William took a sip of his tea before beginning to polish his scythe. "And for obvious reasons. I know many people that would have thousands of questions for you."

Jade's eyes widened in worry from William's words.

"O-of course, under my management, nothing of the sort will be tolerated. There is no need to be tense.  I take proper care of my subordinates." William reached out and gave Jade a slight pat on the hand. And although his movement seemed reluctant and stiff, it calmed Jade down.

"Tell me" William said as he began filing through paperwork. "After all of these years, what made you finally leave the safety your home and come here? I heard that females aren't required to ever work with us."

Jade looked around sheepishly as if for a way to change the subject. "U-um..."

William saw her reaction and looked up from the reflection casted by his blade. "What is it?"

"I-I don't have a reason, really."

"... As many years as Grell and I have worked together, I feel like I know when someone is lying. I don't plan on taking it any easier on you because of your gen-"

Jade stood to her feet and shook her head frantically. "No! Please don't get that idea! It's... its just that..." her voice trailed off before the sentenve was finished.

William leaned forward in attempt to hear her better. "What was that? Your hesitation is doing nothing but peaking my interest."

As was obvious, William had little to no experience with females. Though he did talk to some humans, it was never more than a task meant for work. So William had little no concern for the younger woman who sat shaking across from him.

"You are wasting my time, Jade. I will give you to the count of three." He leant forward as if in interest. Their faces were only inches apart. Jade could smell the sweet cologne that lingered on William's skin.

"One..."

Jade gripped tightly at her skirt and shut her eyes.

"Two..."

She sniffled as a tear slowly slid down her cheek.

William took in a breath of air, all too familiar with tears from his years with Grell.

"Thr-"

"It's because I love you! "

William froze in his tracks at the word. Love? He hadn't ever experienced such a feeling in his life.

"Though I don't fully grasp its meaning, I was taught by my father such a word is poison.  All love does is make one vulnerable. Stop with this non- "

Before William could say another word, he heard the door fly open and Jade was running down the hall.

Dozens of his subordinates lifted their head from the tedious filing before looking at the sobbing woman and then William. The humming around of gossip began to fill the large space.

She loved him? Was she insane? William T. Spears, the head of the dispatch wing and she told him that she loves him? It must be some sick joke..

William shot the workers a glare before fixing his glasses and closing his door. He looked out the window and saw Jade outside and still running down the street. William let out a sigh and reached for his paperwork. 

"Let her leave. If she can't handle a conversation, she has no place here." William muttered as he placed his scythe besides his chair. He looked across the table to see the half full cup with steam still coming from it sitting across from him."Tch, honestly... That was my last bit of tea, too.."

He let out a small sigh as he picked up the tea set and looked out the window. "Love... What is love..?"
