Chapter 14

He is a good driver.

I can drive too, but he can drive better.

He looks at me from the corner of his eye.

He smiles.

I smile, but not at him.

He stops in front of a bench

It’s worn down and in the middle of nowhere.

I asked him where we were.

He said somewhere.

He got out of the car.

I did too.

We were far from the highway.

And then there was the bench.

The bench the middle of nowhere.

I sat on the bench.

He sits next to me.

We stared at the stars for a really long time.

He asked me what happened to my eye.

I don’t say anything.

He doesn’t ask me again.

He sighs.

I sigh too.

He says he cares.

I tell him I don’t believe him.

He says I should.

He stands up.

He holds out a hand.

I take it.

He hugs me.

He hugs me hard.

I don’t know why but I cry.

My eye starts to hurt.

He noticed.

He tells me I’m gonna be fine.

I tell him I won’t.

He says he doesn’t believe me.
