Prologue ─ Larger Than Herself

━━━━━ STEPHANIE WITWICKY WAS not always a Witwicky, she had been adopted by the Witwicky's just shortly after she had been born. It's not that her parents didn't want her, it's that they weren't ready for a kid. In walks Judy and Ron Witwicky, Americans, but the perfect couple to take in Stephanie and raise her as if she were their own. They wanted what was best for Stephanie and they felt that she would feel love more with the couple.

Judy and Ron Witwicky made sure that Stephanie never knew that she was adopted, mainly because her biological parents wanted to keep it a secret. They didn't want the young child to know about her true family. They told Judy and Ron that she had to find out on her own it wasn't something they could just come forward and tell her. Her birth records were sealed and hidden away, new ones had been created in place.

She had now become a Witwicky, her biological name long forgotten. To some extent the government had known what about her and she would later be recruited to join the military. There wasn't really an option for her not to do it, she just didn't understand why she was dealing with these difficulties. Even as Stephanie grew up and even before she joined the military she always had a knack for getting into some kind of trouble.

Whether it was with her parents, the school, the police, some kind of trouble found a way to her. It's not that she wanted to get into trouble it's just wherever she went trouble followed her. Stephanie's parents eventually learned to get use to that part of Stephanie knowing it would never truly go away. During her teenage years and well into her adulthood the woman spent a long time trying to find out who she was.

Because she had spent that time doing the things that she knew she shouldn't have been doing she got pregnant. 9 months later at the age of 18 she gave birth to a beautiful daughter. She and her boyfriend at the time started to raise her together but Stephanie had been called in for her service. Stephanie didn't want to leave Claire behind by Lance insisted that she would be okay that he could raise her on his own. He had his parents and he had her parents.

While Stephanie was overseas Lance's parents had passed away. She never found out how either of them died but she didn't want to press the matter. Especially since Lance was no longer her boyfriend. She didn't want him waiting for her even though she knew that the real reason was because she didn't love him the way that he loved her. Lance had of course found the love of his life but that love didn't last too long as she was taken away from him.

Stephanie still came to visit her family that included her daughter and even though her and Lance weren't together she still saw him as family. As the years moved on and Stephanie progressed in what she was doing she moved higher up in ranks. Eventually it came to a point in time where she was certain that she had discovered what she was meant to do, why she had been put on this earth.

That was all she ever wanted to do. But she hadn't exactly found it being in the army. Sure she made friends that would be with her forever but something was missing from her life, something that she knew she needed. She had talked about it time and time again with William Lennox and Robert Epps, two of her closest friends after Hero and Caspian had left. They had found their purpose outside the army.

Hero became a professor which he loved more than anything. And because Caspian had some medical training within the army she had gone to become a nurse. She disliked the hours but at the end of the day it was worth it to be able to help save lives without the constant threat of gunfire or bombs going off. It was a nice change of pace. Lennox and Epps always supported the things that Stephanie did.

She was right by their side when they wanted to do stuff outside the army, she supported them both just as much as they supported her. They were her found family, that meant more to her just like her parents, brother, and daughter. Stephanie had promised that as soon as her tour was over she would come see her parents and brother as well as spending some time with Claire and Lance.

Stephanie had been counting down the days until she could go home and see everyone. Though she hadn't intended for the following events to take place and pull her into something much larger than herself. Though deep down she knew that what had been coming her way was the one thing she had been looking for all her life. And now that she had it, she didn't want anything or anyone to take it away from her.
