College was just like high school, everyone still had something to prove. The campus was huge with all the different faculties spread out everywhere. Leyah and Roni were thinking of moving in together, but Roni's taste was way beyond Leyah's budget. Leyah missed Bryan a lot but she was too stubborn to call him.
She walked to her first class, economics in the business department. All new faces and a lot to learn, Leyah quickly made friends with a girl who was from Africa. She was nice and spoke in a different accent. Leyah's phone buzzed in class, and she turned it on silent before the teacher noticed. Dikembe was a beautiful dark skin girl from Sudan, she wore her hair natural. She was tall and thin with high cheek bones. They sat down in the cafeteria together as they went through their timetable, they were studying the same course business and accounting, which means they were in all the same classes. Leyah sipped on a juice as Dikembe told her about Sudan. Leyah's phone buzzed again and she took it out of her bag to check it. Two messages, one from Roni and the other one from an unknown number it was a voicemail. She tried to listen to the voicemail over the noise of the crowded café.
"Hi Leyah, this is Adrian. Do you think we can meet somewhere so we can talk? I'm going to be at the mall after work tonight, can you come to the food court around six? I hope to see you there." Leyah's heart hurt as her hands trembled trying to hold the phone. She could no longer hear what Dikembe was saying, her lips moved but no sound was coming out.
"Hey Dikembe, I have to go to the bathroom," Leyah quickly grabbed her backpack and ran into the bathroom and went into one of the stalls. She put the lid of the toilet down and sat on top. She took deep breaths and dialled Roni on the phone,
"Hey girl, where are you?" Roni picked up almost immediately. Leyah's tears were coming out uncontrollably,
"Roni, meet me in the cafeteria in the business faculty, I really need to talk to you." Roni was on her way for her best friend, she didn't hesitate. She got out of the bookshop and zipped to the cafeteria in seconds. Leyah waved her down to come to the bathroom, poor Dikembe was still sitting alone waiting on Leyah.
"What's going on? Roni questioned her with her brow raised. Leyah blurted all the information about Adrian's call. "Well you're not going to go right?" Roni asked hoping Leyah would say no.
Leyah looked desperate, "I want to go and see what he has to say for himself."
Roni sighed, "No Leyah, it's been almost two months, what could he possibly have to say to you? That he's sorry he cheated on his wife and kids with you and that he still wants you to be his side chick"
Leyah looked confused, she bit her fingernails contemplating.
"Don't do it Leyah." Roni begged.
"I have to get closure girl, I need this." She said looking at his missed call.
Roni shook her head at Leyah's stupidity, "please don't come back crying to me." Roni hated to see Leyah so upset and sad. Roni loved seeing Leyah with Bryan, and because she was still so hung up on Adrian, she couldn't give Bryan a hundred percent of herself. Roni knew she couldn't stop Leyah, she was stubborn and when she had her mind made up that was that.
Bryan couldn't stop thinking of Leyah since his birthday, it had been about two weeks since he last saw her, and he missed her so much. Sometimes he took out his phone and played around with her number wanting to dial it but then didn't. He planned exactly what he was going to say if, and when he would run into her. He walked to the carpark to get his gym bag, he was wearing jeans and a sweater, and his cap turned backwards. He caught a glimpse of Leyah from the corner of his eye, he quickly turned. She was walking towards the bus stop as if she was late for something, he quickly ran to catch up to her.
