Love Letter, 1981

A vintage chocolate box,
filled with letters, was hidden in my mother's closet.
When I was a girl, I opened it and read the first one on top,
a love letter from 1981.
My mother discovered me then gently asked to see it.
With finely manicured hands, she tore it neatly in two
with a snarl on her lovely face.
