They flew non-stop for the next few weeks. They've rarely ever left the academy for secrective reasons. The teachers certaintly understated the size of the world. The ocean was huge. It took days to fly across it to Pyrrhia.
During the days of flying, Midnight had a lot of time to think. What would her life had been like if she'd grown up out here? Would she be the same as she was? How different would her life be?
On the second week, they finally landed on the shore of a desert. The heat beat down on her midnight blue scales.
Sapphire winced at how warm it was. She looked out at the Great Ice Cliff. "Can't we go there? Just for a little?"
Iris shook her head. "We won't have enough time. Let's just go kill the queen."
Midnight could sense waves of guilt and regret coming off each of them. Even years of training couldn't push that away. And how would it? They were going off to kill Queen Glory, sending the Rainwings and Nightwings into chaos. Especially after Glory's only dragonet, Firefly, was murdered, and she swore never to have another dragonet. Once they killed Glory, who would take the throne?
She looked up. "Well, we can rest here for the night," Midnight said.
"Here?" Sapphire complained. "Can't we go somewhere cooler?"
"I'm fine with it," Glasswing said.
Midnight shrugged. "Where else could we go?"
Iris looked around. "We could find a cave?"
"I thought we were gonna do that anyways," Glasswing observed. "Were we supposed to just lay down on the sand?"
Iris glared at him. "Well, I suppose you can lay in the sand."
"There," Sapphire said, pointing to a cave a bit farther out.
"Wait," Midnight said. "Isn't there a tunnel to the rainforest somewhere around here?"
"I wouldn't risk it," Glasswing said. "It would take longer to search for a hidden tunnel in the sands then just flying there ourselves. And who knows if the tunnel still exists?"
"True," Midnight said. "So, we find a cave?"
"Yea-" Glasswing started, and stopped suddenly. His antennae unfurled.
Sapphire quietly drew her knife, Iris pulled out a sword, and Midnight nocked an arrow. They all waited in silence. Fear and anxiety radiated off each of them. They all stood still, waiting. Darkness was peeking over the horizon.
Suddenly, a Rainwing plumeted out of the sky. She landed on Glasswing, who roared and shot silk at her.
The Rainwing landed onto the sand, growling. "Why are you going to the Rainforest?" she cried.
"None of your buisness," Sapphire snarled.
"Well, I heard that a group of assasins were going to kill our queen," the Rainwing said. "Do you know anything about them?"
Midnight could feel the suspiscion coming off her. She knew. Iris was studying Midnight carefully, and she nodded slightly.
The Rainwing eyed all of them. "Do you?" she said, with a lot more emphasis.
In a flash, Sapphire slit her throat. The Rainwing roared and shot venom into the Icewing's eyes. Both dragons collapsed.
Pain from Sapphire, a pang of sadness from the rest of them. Emotions that weren't supposed to be allowed. Because if we can't even handle one death, how could we kill Glory, and send two tribes into chaos?
