"Gilbert," Anne said slowly, continuing to walk. "I believe your house is not in this direction."

"I'm walking you home Anne," he laughed nervously.

"I'm perfectly capable of walking myself, thank you."

     "I'm doing it anyway."

Anne stayed silent, making everyone else stay silent.

"Well," Diana broke the silence after a minute or so. "I believe this is where I turn. Have fun walking home."

"Yes," she mumbled. "Thank you. Gilbert, really, you can go home."

"Why don't you want me to walk you home?"

     "I- never mind. Let's go. I suppose I won't today."

     "Won't what today?"

     "Nothing."

     "Something!"

     "Nothing!"

     "Something, Anne," he pushed playfully.

"Gilbert you are the most intolerable boy on the planet!"

"Yet you seem to stand me!"

     "No, I can't stand you."

     "I think you can."

     "Well you're wrong."

"Come on Anne! Show a little mercy here!"

"Well the truce is off! I can bug you as much as I want!"

"Well so can I! I like bugging you!"

Anne rolled her eyes, glaring at him. "Of course you do," she blushed.

     "How about a new truce?"

Anne's walking seemed to get even faster than it was before. "Anne, slow down!" Gilbert grabbed her arm, turning her to face him. They came face to face, inches away from each other. "How about a new truce?"

"What would be in this one?"

"Maybe we can figure it out as I walk you home?"

     "Okay," she breathed out.

"Okay," he smiled. Gilbert looked at his hand still on her arm, and let go.

Both opened their mouth to speak to each other, but didn't say a word. They continued silently to Green Gables. Anne was in her head, clenching her jaw, and Gilbert smiling to himself.

Diana smiled as she walked alone to her house, even putting a skip in her step.

"Diana! I was getting worried," her mother sighed when she walked in.

Diana's face dropped. "Hello mother. I was held back a bit, with my friends."

"Did you have a good day at school?"

"Yes, it was really good."

"Did being around your friends make you happy?"

"It did mother! I would however, very much enjoy going to my piano. I have a new tune in my head."

The tune was more happy, everyone in the house could tell. They listened happily. It was the most relieving thing in the house for the past several months.
